I have missed a few posts but why are you all breaking the broodies? I would like to have more (less cleaning the incubators). My broody Leghorn hatched 5 Brahma eggs, but she killed the black one, which is my mistake as I know Leghorns don't like black colour but I didn't take the chick immediately out of the nest. I have another broody Leghorn in the nest for 3rd day now and I will be moving her on her own tonight so the rest don't disturb her laying eggs in her nest.

Frizzle chicken - I found a lady who has frizzle chicken, I drove 2 hours and was shocked how ugly they look like! Apparently they lose ALL (all, all, all) feathers during summer, they look like frozen chicken from the supermarket. They grow feathers back in the fall. Despite of all the the lady will sell me some frizzle chicks next week, just when my Silky is due to hatch and I will give them to the Silky to raise...well that's my plan

@BDutch I think I know how to add chicks under mama and my Silky is an exceptional mama, BUT I am sure I can always learn more, so please share any tips.

On the topic of when will they start laying eggs - I have hatched November and the pullets started laying eggs in March the next year.
This year I have a January and February hatch and they all started laying at 4 months of age. I give it to the fact that they are free range and I feed them well.

I have no experience with adding chicks to a broody, but I have been reading how to do this as safe as possible.

If you’re broodies chicks hatch you add one incubator chick after dark. See if she excepts the chick, you can add another / two more an hour or a few hours later as long as its dark.

If there are no more eggs to hatch (unfertilised/death embryos) you can take the bad eggs out and replace them for chickens.

I you have a broody on unfertilised eggs, you can do the ‘change eggs for chicks‘ trick too, from a week until 4 weeks after the got broody.

my broody pekin hatched 4 chicks. I gave her about 20 chicks from incubator as well. no tricks, I just put them under her as they hatched and watched how happy she was to have them.

Maybe in Greece. Our summer is better for chicks to grow up. Not too hot.
In the Netherlands and Germany rather cold rainy and winter weather with short days can be expected in November. Which is not fine for chicks.

How are you doing with all the rain in Germany @Erba and @abpatchy ?

I am sorry I didn't respond. My pc needed a cleaning and wouldn't work anymore. I just now got around to doing that.
The rain had got me down. I usually don't mind rain... but it was really getting to me. Then it was hot... It is a weird summer for sure!
The weeds grow faster than any vegetables in the garden. I can't keep up pulling them.
This morning I turned on the heater in the car it was so cold! It was warm in the afternoon. It's July!!! Summer! Crazy!
