Pekin Duck Club!

:bowOk Pekin experts I need answers!!!! I’m still new to ducks and trying to figure out if this is normal. My Pekin Drake is tall, sleek, agile, fast and strong. He can jump up at least 12 inches (which is the top step of the 3 step ladder outside of the pool). My Pekin Duck however is short (her legs look shorter), rounder, a klutz, and anything but sleek and graceful. They are both very sweet and smart though. :loveIs it normal for the male and female to be so different? Thanks!!

@Miss Lydia
In preparation for the new batches, I’m looking for a cheaper alternative to $20 bags of feed for ducklings. Brewers yeast isn’t readily available, so I’ve not used it in the past.
Is this appropriate (the garlic confuses me. Vets claim it’s actually poison to dogs and cats)?

I would not use this product based on the niacin content. I don’t think I would personally worry about feeding my ducks garlic, but the niacin content of this is really low. Do you have a tractor supply near you? Do you have an amazon account?

I haven't ever used that product you pictured but I do put garlic in my dogs feed every morning and my birds get it also. I have done it for years and they are still here and healthy.

Math is not my forte so I am not sure on how much niacin that is but seems .800mgs may not be much lets get a scientist here to speak
@CayugaJana Jana

I put 1 tablespoon of garlic to half 2 gal bucket of feed.
Sorry Miss Lydia! I don’t know how I keep missing posts. And you are right, the niacin is really really really low based on the ingredient label I read. I would not use this product. I would see if there is nutritional yeast in the baking section of a grocery store or try to order it online. If those aren’t options, let us know and we can help you find something @BullChick

Here’s my only pekin we have this year ❤️ Her names quackera cuz she quacks constantly even when she was a baby :)

Curious does anyone else’s Perkins have little black feathering / spot in their feathers? She’s got a few behind her head that came out when she was feathering out
:love none of mine have had a black feather but yours sure are cute.

Margery (Margie) would like to join the Pekin club. She is 2 years old, sweet, and has roughly one brain cell. Thankfully, her sister Daphne (Rouen) keeps her out of trouble. Margie’s favorite hobbies include hanging out with her sister, napping, rooting through mud to find tasty surprises, and being sprayed with the garden hose.

Margie’s dislikes include ground that isn’t perfectly level and straight (tripping hazards everywhere!) and predators.
Awwww.... I don’t think ducks are near as smart as say a dog but I love them anyway. She looks precious and squishy.

I was checking on her, and she acted like a viper. :lol:
Aretha came out for a swim, and Jojo wanted to mate her. :smack

I saw it through the window, or I would have counted the eggs.

Janice was screaming at me for just coming near the pen.

I know that feeling. Anytime I looked at one of mine, she would hiss at me. Even if I was across the yard.

It’s hard to be a Pekin. Two guesses as to which of these two ducks would get eaten by a predator first. Poor girl sticks out like a sore thumb.

***Note-I wont let that happen :) ***
I think of this very thing too. Plus they are bigger and slower. But they are so darn cute. They just really need us to protect them huh?!

Nothing wrong with it.

:confused: I wonder if people just skim through messages. I never said a thing about poultry and garlic. I said that vets around here all say dogs should not have it.
I didn’t think it had enough niacin, and asked for confirmation. I ordered some stuff off Amazon. As I said, there are no sources around here. I really live in the country. The closest Walmart doesn’t sell anything like that.
Did you know Walmart sells caskets and urns? :D

Are you referring to my response? If so, no I didn’t skim through your message. I was honestly trying to answer your question.:D It doesn’t have enough. Sometimes things don’t get conveyed correctly when everything is just typed out.;) Are you still wanting to find a different source of niacin or are you satisfied with what you found? And no I did not know Walmart sells caskets?! I’m not sure how I feel about that....:lau

First out was a hinnie. I’m guessing it had a birth defect. I saw two more eggs.
