Pekin Duck Club!

[.@]Going Quackers[/@]
These are my first birds and I just bought 4 pekin ducklings and some mixed breed chicks and they will be free range together and go into this little shed with a small area for them to be in grass at nighT

Sounds similar to me, except i have separate coops/barns for the chickens and ducks. Just make sure any night time pens cannot be reached into, coons are really good at that and they make an awful mess of birds.

Hello!

I'm wondering at what age do you see a size difference between male and female Pekin. I have 2 ducklings, hatched same day but one is larger than the other..could that mean male?
Thanks!

NOt necessarily... voice is the first indicator of it, by about 5-6wks you start hearing differing voices(altho i admit i starting hearing some quacking by 3-4wks). Mine are now over 6wks and have distinct voices.. i know i have some ducks(female) and at least 1 drake(raspy)

Welcome to the duck forum!

Okay. Breathe. Do they have water and food 24/7? They need that. If they run out of water, they will over drink and then urp.

Yes, they are waterfowl and for their first 8 weeks they need a safe container of drinking water (nothing they could fall in and drown - and ducklings could drown under certain conditions) all the time. And food, all the time.

There are some good ideas here

I would just say keep their water with food 24/7 till they are at least 8 weeks old.

There are ways to keep the brooder from becoming too wet. Weird, but ducklings suffer if their bedding gets wet and at the same time they are very good at wetting the bedding!

Not sure how old our Pekin is...but it's call is slightly different from that of our Crested ducks. The tail feathers are straight, and it's quite big, but maybe it's a drake. What do ya'll think?
