Pekin Duck Club!

Yes there are many wild ducks around my lake and other birds including cranes, swans, pelicans, and etc. The few as in maybe 5 people I actually know of who are truely against them said that these ducks run a risk for disease, but so do the other birds. A long with claiming my property has attracted other houses of rat infestations because we feed the ducks outside. which isn't true. I guess there has been rat infestations in the neighborhood and people have set traps to poison them and the neighbors were claiming we did and it poisoned a raccoon so they don't want small children to be near our house because are ducks have diseases. I'm just trying to figure out how  to handle a situation to prove that these ducks really won't and can't harm anybody.

You should find someone local to test your birds for disease and have him right a note with his signature that they are clean. Ducks arent as prone to disease as chickens and our fair never checks them for pullorum, only chickens.

I live near downtown St. Petersburg, Florida and had codes come to me the other month about a "complaint' we had ducks/chickens and were selling eggs. This shocked me as my neighbors come from all over to walk their dogs and kids to see our ducks. The codes guy was a doll. He said get a petition stating that your neighbors are okay with your ducks/chickens and have no complaints. I walked around a few block radius of my house and got 31 signatures in no time. I never did find out who complained but either they signed the petition or they are not on my block. Living on a lot it takes a lot of effort to keep everything nice in lieu of the ducks. I have a 125 gal pond out front that needs to be maintained regularly. As for the ducks chasing the dog, my male chases and picks on my pit bull all the time. I probably scold him 1o times a day for chasing the dog. He grabs her mouth and just pulls on the flabby tissue. My pitt is such a good girl, she tries to swing her butt around to keep him off of her. Sometimes she does hold him down and gently chew on him. I know that is a delicate situation that the duck wont win but I cant get him to behave. I pick him up and love on him and tell him to leave the dog alone but he doesn't quit. He thinks he is defending my two females. Also, per codes as far as he knew it was not illegal to sell eggs as we don't have a huge business here we sell eggs to pay for the kibble. Hope this might help.
If this was regarding my situation thank you. I know that there is an HOA code stating that "article 5 stating that only house hold pets are aloud as in dogs, cats and etc, No farm animals. I don't sell the eggs or anything though. we just use them to eat sometimes thats all. They're pretty much just lovable pets that live outside in a coop.

Hi every one I have a question about my Ducks health. I just got back from a week long camp and my dad failed to tell me that one of my girls was limping. So I picked her up and her feet seemed fine and so did her leg.I then looked at her beak and I spotted green spots all over it. I thought it was just stuff from their pond so I tried wiping it off, it didn't come off. So I was just wondering if any of you seen this before. Oh and I should add that she made her first egg a few days ago maybe that has something to do with her limp?

Green spots are not that unusual on a duck's bill, seems to me.

Egg laying can cause limping, if she gets egg bound. Also, if there are drakes, they could be rough on her and they need to be separated for her safety, at least for a while.

Google "green specks on ducks bill" and look at the images they have. You little girls bill is spotless compared to some of them. Nothing to worry about probably.

My female pekin has the same problem. It's just the stress/nutrient deficient from laying eggs, I leave raw oyster shells (from a feed store) while shes locked up in the coop that way if she gets hungry through the night that's what she'll eat. Also ducks legs are very fragile if she had to get up in a high area and stumbled it could just be sprained. Try getting niacin vitamins and taking out a small amount of the powder and mixing it in her water. It should help heal the leg. It worked for our female pekin when she hurt herself stumbling out of the pond.

So my female pekin duck has had this sneeze/cough for a couple of weeks. I can't tell if it's from her food or something got caught in her nose or if she is sick. It's like a little squeak/cough sometimes then sometimes it's like almost a grunt/bark sound. I know ducks are good at hiding when they're not feeling well, but I just can't tell if she has a cold because our drake isn't coughing or sneezing from the food, but he doesn't eat as much as she does. I have some left over antibiotics from when she had to get stiches (she was attacked by a dog). I'm wondering if that will help if she's sick. I just hope she doesn't have the flu. Anybody have any other ideas of what it could be?

Hello all! So I think I have pekin ducklings and am joining the group. Here are my 2 I got on Thursday. They are 2 weeks old and seem really big to me. I'm starting on their duck house tomorrow morning when it is somewhat cool out. They are so stinking cute though.
