Pekin Duck Club!

I rescued two pekins...one is surely a male and the other could be a female. They are both very healthy and big...but no eggs! I thought the male pekin has a curly tail and the female a flat? Can anyone elaborate on the identification of the sex of the girls and if and when they lay any eggs? If it is a girl, I have had her a good few months...she is bigger than my spaniel...and no eggs. Should I be doing something different? Is it okay to get more female pekins for the boy? Will this cause a problem for them? Thanks for your help!

If there is no visible drake feather although he is more than 5/6 months old, he could either be in molt or a female. Lol. Best way for older than 5 months is the voice. Females are loud and you can hear them from far. Males have a raspy voice, subdued and more quite.

For the eggs, it could be that she takes a winter break. They do that sometimes for a few months, depending on where you live and how cold it gets. She should start up again in a month or so.

And yes, you can always add more females to your male, the usual ratio is 1 male to about 4-5 females max, at least in my opinion.
If you get another male they could start fighting over the females come spring (breeding season) if there are not many females. Plus they can over mate the female too, so she could end up with a bare neck and maybe getting hurt and stop laying too.

Just my 5 cents but hope it helps...

Sometimes during a moult you won't see any curly drake feathers on the males, and young male pekins take a while to get them (5 or 6 months).
The easiest and fastest way to sex pekins is by voice. Females have a very loud quack, while males make a much softer sound (they sound like they have a permanent case of laryngitis). If you can hear one of your ducks from across the yard, it's a hen. If it's always speaking in whispers, it's a drake.

And one drake will be quite happy with 3 or 4 lovely ladies by his side!

Hi everyone! I can't seem to get my female to lay eggs at all - could you help me please they are 1yr old. Thank you
