Pekin Duck Club!

Mine are exactly the same! They cant stand being picked up, but if I'm sitting on the ground, they will climb up onto my lap and shove the better part of themselves into my jacket. But when we take them in/out of their nighttime pen (its a stock tank so we have to lift them in and out) they kick and scream! Seems like a Pekin trend. "High up! High up! Noooooo!"

that's funny because they wanna be touched and snuggled on their own terms. My friend's Pekin Kensington and her playmate female harlequin Montgomery are both the background photo on my smartphone. I stare at it alot cuz they are so cute. They two girls are inseparable and it's amazing to see their size differences.

Yes! You'd think someone was killing them when you pick them up, but once you have them they are all cuddles and love! Totally on their terms!!

That is so true regarding my friend's girl.  Is this common with pekins?  his welsh harlequin is just the opposite.

My Saxonies are the same way as my Pekins. They are also back sensitive and don't like having their backs touched, but will be beside themselves with happiness with a belly or neck rub... Perhaps it's a heavy duck thing...

Id say it doesn't really matter the breed of the duck. Some just like to get held and cuddled, others don't. Just like us people!

Now the non-flying ducks are usually afraid of heights that why they go crazy lifting/picking up as they don't know what to make of it. Again, just like for us with something that scares us.

Repetition is the key. And starting out early. If they get handled and picked up a lot as youngens they don't seem to be that skidding or afraid anymore since they know they're safe with you.

We have a flock of almost 60 ducks of 7 breeds and they all get handled. They might protest cause they don't want to at that moment, but they all seem to like it.

the heavy thing sounds plausible. His WH is easy to carry without spazzing out whereas the Pekin spazzes.

good points u have cuz even tho John's harlequin likes to be pet and hugged, she has moments when she's resistant to being touch. But it's all fascinating and ducks are wonderful beings with quirks and feelings like us.

When ours were freshly hatched, up until the time that it got a bit more difficult to hold them, they would fall asleep in our hands. They never minded being picked up or cuddled. They used to sit on my shoulder and nibble my hair. Now, they kick and scream like they're being carried off to slaughter.
I would think that it is more the weight thing, they like to have their feet securely on the ground.

Oooo! We have noticed that too! The back is a no go! But neck, chest, belly, even beak/eye rubbies are the best ever! They do that weird shaky neck/ duck purr thing when you touch their face. Like they cant control their happiness so they vibrate.
