Actually, I felt pretty safe with that one... we had just had a long swim in the tub, they were dried off, and they hadn't had lunch yet. So, the poop level was pretty low by that point. Afterwards, when I returned that one back to the brooder, who knows?Your better than me! I'm new to ducks (2 new pekin) I do have 13 chicken. After seeing how much they poop I;m not sure I would let them on my carpet. But I do love them, I'm w/ them as much as possible but they seem scared of me. Is that usual? I had heard they follow you like a pet but right now they just run away. If I hold them for a min. and rub their neck bump (is there a name for that) they calm down and stay w/ me, any help would help
Congrats! I have a Jumbo as well - love her! Her name is Ping.
Do you think I qualify? I have JUMBO Pekin ducklings (2 @ 20 days old, 4 @ 13 days old), as well as Rouen ducklings (2 @ 20 days old, 4 @ 13 days old). My oldest Jumbo Pekins are now getting their white feathers in... and they ALL are characters, but the Jumbo Pekins definitely have more personality than the Rouens, IMO. I had to take two large totes and cut a hole in the side of both of them, and then taped them together through the window I created, to keep their bedding side dry, and their food and water side litter-free. It has been a week now, and they are much happier with the new configuration. Anyways, I had 1 of the older Jumbo Pekins and 1 of the older Rouens in the bedding side, when their brooder mates were still in the food and water side, and they were zooming around in circles, chasing each other, and having a good ole time!
I think it's all about patience - spend as much time as you can with them. It's best to sit down and let them come to you. They like to play and nibble on things - ours liked really long rubberbands - hold onto it tight so they don't get it down - also little rubber balls with those rubber spikes on them. LOTS of healthy treats go a long way. They will also go through stages - at different times ours have been easy to catch and don't care how close we get to them, others they have wanted their distance.Your better than me! Is she a house duck? Ours are not house ducks but we had them in for a REALLY long time as they were not feathered out enough to head out in the middle of winter. We used straw - seemed to work the best at that age. If he/she's not eating the pine shavings, that would also be a good alternative. I used 3 things as they grew - 1. paper towels (for the first couple weeks), 2. pine crumble (animal bedding), THEN switched to straw in the bathtub. When we finally got them outside, their coop and run is a mix of straw and pine shavings, but mostly pine.I've noticed a few questions about bedding and what is good to use and what is not. Right now I do 1-2 loads of laundry per day to get Quack-Quack's bedding and what not clean. He/She sleeps in a large canvas dog kennel in the bedroom with us and I am using blankets and sheets for bedding. Is there anything that works better? What about cloth incontinence pads, like the ones used in nursing homes? The moisture seems to soak through the folded blnaket and there's an airing out I have to go through every day. I've also been wondering if Lysol spray used in the kennel when Quack-Quack will NOT be using it for a while be safe? Although I take a damp cloth to the kennel I was thinking Lysol would still be nice if I can use it.
Terribly sorry for this late reply if it is directed towards me!!!! Thanks for liking the pics!! Not a bother at all!!!!!!!!! Again, I apologize! My ducks like to be around me, but it is and has been a ton of work! I'm about to go get a baby pig this afternoon and I bet by tomorrow he'll be tamer than my dogs forever...lol. I'm bad about typing what I mean and get all wordy without saying anything...lol. hmmm..... the biggest thing that helps me tame my ducks is what voice I use. It's a super excited baby talk, tons and tons a praise, Steve Irwin the crocodile hunter times 20 type voice and they love it!...lol. ....without that I get no where with them. Tons of time with them! I make myself look small to them and make sure I have my arms and hands in with them. Laying with them and just being a duck with them while they do their thing makes huge strides with mine! ...and is my favorite thing to do! I'd say that is the second biggest thing that tames my ducks. I spend hours doing that. Hard to explain, but I do what they do, I just have to feel it out how I do it to not scare them and that makes them comfortable. They take naps right by my head now when they get tired.....I really like that! The hand feeding and treats really help. Pushing myself on them has been the biggest set back for me on my ducks. I'm new to ducks, but this is and has been a blast! I don't give up and I experiment until an animal that I own is very tame....Looks good to me!I'm new to this. So forgive me if I'm a bother to you.
They come to me when I have something in my hand, but only then. Do they come to you all the time and follow you around? I'm getting told that. I don't see it. My son got them for me at Easter. I have 13 chickens and have spoken about getting some someday. (I would of liked to of picked them) Is it because they are still young?
Good Pix's Keep up the good work!![]()
