Pekin Duck Club!

Ohhhhh what a doll! And no, your duck isn't dangerous at all in the sense of it physically hurting your children. It's because younger children are hard to keep from touching their face, putting hands in their mouth, etc before they can be properly washed. They can spread salmonella which can be very dangerous to young children. Just wash their hands good and watch them close. Ducks and children just go together!

I had my granddaughter out at the park today and these guys were there and she asked if we could get some of them. They are so beautiful but I like the pekins and wouldn't want to add something that big to my flock.
Does anyone here raise geese with their ducks?

Hello
I am new here in BYC .. And am a new mummy to a very cute 3 weeks old duckling and i believe that its a pekin ... iv always been a fan of pekin they have such a personality.
This is my 3ed time to raise a pekin, i felt in love 18 years ago when i had my 1st. However, i never new that ducklings can be dangerous to children and infants and i have two wonderful boys and now i am terrified after reading all the warnings to keep duck and ducklings away from children under the age of 5. I started to see my poor little duckling as a monster covered with cute fuzz.can someone help me to stop worrying .. or i should ?!!
Thank you
That duckling is adorable, and beleive me your worries are not to be taken lightly. Ducklings and children can be together but it has to be supervised time, mainly when they are tiny like yours that the children learn how to handle carefully, sitting on the floor and mommy watching and showing how to handle with out squeezing or dropping the duckling and putting duckling in brooder when you cannot be with them all. Then as duckling grows they should be allowed to interact with the duckling any time you can be there and that way they all get to know each other. Ducks like to have quiet calmness around them so hollering running children can make them scared and nervous. I don't know how you can address this issue because it's a known thing children love to run and holler. But maybe you can incorporate some learning there too.
As for when duckling becomes adult training is in order, no teasing from the kids and no aggression from the ducks whether drake or duck. I think you can have a Duckling and children it just takes a bit of work and training on both sides. When our ducks were ducklings and out grand kids were here they went by the principles I just gave you and they all got along great. As for illness go by sanaitary as would would anywhere else there is animals, hand washing everytime they hold the duckling and no kissing on the lips.

I have geese and ducks. Right now my geese have to be in separate fencing because of breeding season they are not tolerant of the other poultry we have. I caution anyone to think along time before getting geese unless you have plenty of property for them to forage in. Even with half acre fenced they were still going after the other birds.

@Miss Lydia what kind of geese? I'm looking to get geese (domestic) and we do have the room. What have they been like for you? Personality, aggression, health, vetting etc…

I had such a wonderful memories and i want my children to have the same .. having a duck at home is amazing but since am keeping him/her indoor for the time being .. it makes me to worry, my child developed a fever today and i was going crazy i thought the duckling was the reason.. fortuitously its not =) .. don't know for how long I'll stay worried .. am not letting him to touch the duckling though i think the duckling imprinted on him ,, she follows him everywhere

I have an 8yr old Embden gander hatched here. A 3 yr old Female Toulouse got her at 4 months old I have a Toulouse gander just turned 1 yr old and a Buff female 1 yr old they came together. Personality ,well during breeding season the ganders can be pretty aggressive protecting their mates and that can turn alot of people off to geese but it's is very normal behavior you just have to teach them they can't get away with biting. The females are usually only aggressive when they have goslings and of course who wouldn't be wanting to protect their young. My females because i am not letting them hatch, have never been aggressive to me but have been to some of my Muscovy's. and I would never trust them around young chicks or ducklings. Health they are very healthy never been sick even my 8 yrs old. If you want geese you have to realize they can be a handful at breeding time and hatching and raising goslings. other time of the year they behave pretty well for geese. LOL I love them even when they are cranky.

Thanks Amiga

He has been seperated so let's hope it is him and not one of the girls.. I swear they can be more aggressive then the drake sometimes ! Makes me wonder if they are crossed with geese !
Yes, those dynamics - here I am assuming it's the drake - very good point you make that ducks (females) can be aggressive, too, toward one another. Wish I had a video of Elf and Romy sumo wrestling.
