Pekin Duck Club!

The people you work with don't have any way of knowing that, and I don't understand why say things to upset you. JoJo has had two huge changes recently, and ducks are very much creatures of habit. It's not at all unusual for them to refuse food or be very picky about it even when less traumatic things happen. I'm not surprised he doesn't move from the mirror. He's probably scared from being in an unfamiliar place, so he's sticking very close to the only thing that seems familiar to him.

It's a good sign that he's eating mealworms, but of course he can't live on nothing but protein. Have you tried chopping some greens to put in a water dish for him? When ducks are refusing their normal feed, they'll often still eat their favorite treats. You can also give him peas or any other healthy treat he likes to help balance out his diet. It would also be a good idea to get him a supplement as Amiga suggested. Do you have a Tractor Supply Company store anywhere near you? Some of those carry poultry Nutri-Drench in the store. That's a great supplement for times like this, and the fact that it's used by mixing it with water makes it a good choice for you.
I totally agree with all JadeComputerGal has said.

Ditto! LOL...hopefully all JoJo needs is time. Bless your heart for keeping a close eye on him. You probably already know that it is possible for ducks to pass due to loneliness/depression. Fingers crossed that this is prevented since he'll be around people more once he's wearing a diaper.

I know, ppl are mean. I even snapped on my mom saying well you should never have gotten ducks in the first place! They are bad pets! They are suppose to be wild...blah....blah...blahhh... I am so sick n tired of ppl throwing in their two cents when they have NO clue what they are talking about!!!:barnie. Anyhow, sorry about ranting, as soon as the hubby gets home from work I will go to tsc and get nutri drench. I fed him greens, he ate all his tomatoes. I made him scrambled eggs, garlic, and brewers yeast for breakfast and he ate it all! Yay!!! But I'm going crazy, being I don't know why charlie got sick, I freaked last night and threw away his feed dish, water dish. What if they have bacteria or something? They were a rubber material. I threw awa his feed bad and grit bag. What if dome kind of bus got into it and that's what made Charlie sick? And that's why JoJo won't eat feed bc he knows its bad. Ahhh!!!! I just don't know!!! :he

I know exactly what you mean about people. I'm a big proponent of people keeping their opinions to themselves when they know little to nothing about the topic. Domestic ducks are not meant to be wild. That's why they're called domestic ducks. I haven't been on your side of this type of conversation when it comes to ducks, but I blasted a manager of another group at work in front of around 20 people at a work social gathering when she started pushing all her uneducated opinions about ferrets on me.

I'm very happy to hear that JoJo is eating a variety of things now even if he's still not eating his duck feed. Sounds like he had a much better breakfast than I did, but then I don't have you here to make it for me.

I would call TSC before you go there, especially if it's more than a few minutes away. Not all of them carry Nutri-Drench for poultry. If they don't carry it, you can ask if they know a local store that does or if they have other poultry vitamin and electrolyte supplements. I know you're somewhat emotionally fragile right now from all the trauma, and I just don't want to see you make yourself crazy driving from store to store only to find they don't have what you're looking for.

It sounds like you're being ultra-cautious in getting rid of all the feed, grit, and food/water dishes. I know I'd do the same thing myself if I were unsure what happened. You've at least taken all that out of the equation now, and I have a very good feeling about JoJo being just fine after he has time to adjust.

Oh, poor JoJo...and poor you! I'm so sorry for all that's happened. You really did everything you could. How is lil' Jo2 holding up?

Lol, thanks. But @Amykins and @JageComputerGal. He seems to be doing OK, he went outside with me and my toddler, went swimming in his pools...now he's back in front of the mirror preening himself... I saved a little feed after I went through the bag before tossing it, making sure nothing was in it which there wasn't but I still pitched it. I even put mealies in his feed to persuade him. He took one bite and walked away. Who knows? But I know my local tsc has nutri drench, Im there enough, I remember seeing it. I have been giving him sav-a-chick probiotics and electrolytes once a day. He just looks sad. He keeps moving his wings a lot, like not spreading them. Almost like he's flexing them. I don't know how to explain it. I just remember charlie doing it the day I took her to the vets. I hope its normal, I'm paranoid. OK, its nap time at my house and I'm joining my toddler, Ryleigh. I don't think JoJo has slept in days. I thought his head was gonna fall in his water dish this morning, he's exhausted. Poor guy!

Are they twitchy, or is he holding them downward a bit? If the first one, that's normal, if the second, I'd check him again. Did the vet do a necropsy on your poor birdie? Was there a bacterial infection going on anywhere?

They are twitchy, I'm relieved as I said I'm extremely paranoid for the time being. The vet didn't. I didn't even think about asking at the time. I wish I would have noe. Too little too late

I don't blame you for the way you're feeling. I'd probably be about to jump out of my skin if I'd had a duck die and didn't know why. You're probably hyper-aware of everything he's doing because you're looking for indications that something might be wrong.

Can you describe the room he's in with his mirror right now? Ducks move their wings a lot, though the movements are sometimes so slight that we don't notice them unless we're really scrutinizing them. Our ducks twitch their wings around a bit in their brooding pens, which aren't cramped, yet they continually flap them and extend them when they're out of the pens. If the room he's in right now isn't pretty wide open, he might just not be comfortable extending and flapping his wings. You have to remember that he's used to being in the big outdoors. It's also entirely possible that he's still trying to get a feel for "the duck in the mirror" to see what it thinks of him. Even though he's staying near it all the time, he's probably still a bit wary of "that duck," what it might do, and what he should do when he's with it.
