Pekin Duck Club!

My husband made a small pond with a fountain in it. It's still a work I'm progress but my 6 pekins love it. I am trying to get some plant life growing around it but unfortunately they eat everything I plant. I love my little duck family they might be messy but they are very entertaining. I do agree that anyone taking on the task of raising any animal should do the research to see if its for you.

@Amiga it's duckweed which is a type of algae right? There is also a nasty looking "seaweed" (yes I know it's not seaweed) in the pond. I will go walk down there and get a picture of it. The new owners have stopped taking care of it. It used to be a really pretty pond.

Well thank you for the warning!! Haha I will definitely take into consideration where we put them now! Haha.
I did see the ducks in the pond today so that gave me some peace of mind at least until I can get them something built and fenced in.

I'm still kind of sad they wouldn't come near me this afternoon, when I went to go feed them.

this morning they came up to me and ate with me standing near them. But this afternoon nothing! What could I be doing wrong?

So I just left the food and went on to skimming some of the algae out of the pond. (Well attempting to skim it out) it's gotten worse since it has been so hot and not a lot of rain. I feel like such a bad duck mom. :-( here is a picture of the pond
That looks more like a small lake than a pond. In any case, that algae growth is probably also a result of poor or no circulation of the water in the pond. Where does the water come from? Is there an inlet source as well as an outlet source. I looks to me like the water is trapped. Is this on public property, could you contact some agency to assist with clean up?

Hey everyone long time since my last post... so today I decided to clean the stalls in the barn. To my surprise I found a nest of duck eggs. Now my only female duck which is a Pekin, hasn't been laying the past 2 months, I assumed it was because of some stress from a recent raccoon raid(lost my oldest girl along with three other girls) but when I went in there there was a big nest made about a foot high of hay and straw and about 7 eggs in there. Now would it be possible if I left the eggs in there that she would go broody? I've never had a Pekin go broody before so I was just wondering if the big nest was a sign? Thanks

Duckweed is not algae, it is a plant and is not bad for ducks. Let me find a link.

@Amiga , I so much want some clean duckweed. Do you know of a reliable place to get it? I see sellers of it on the Internet but know nothing about them or where they're getting it. It's a native invasive plant here, but there's no way I'm going to go around plucking it out of strange ponds to put in my own. I'd really like to find some that's been cultivated in clean conditions like I'd do with mine if I can get some starter weed. If any of you have some that's clean, I'd be delighted to pay you a very fair price for the duckweed plus shipping.

Hey I did see them in the pond today which makes me a little happier until I can get something built for them and to our house. I have been trying to skim the algae out of the pond for the time being. It's absolutely horrible. :-/ this is the pond.
Wow that is a huge algae bloom. and such a big pond too. another thing you have to be concerned about is snapping turtles they have been known to bite of feet. shred webbing and even take bites out of chests. They also eat ducklings and goslings. I know your working on them a safe place but these are just some of the things that need to be made aware of. As for being afraid of you it's not un common for our ducks to go through stages where they are afraid of us and everything else too. After all they are considered prey and it takes time and patience to earn their trust. Once you get them home and can spend time with them they will warm up much better. But ducks once adults really don't like to be picked up and hugged on unless you have one that's imprinted on you. But you can teach them that it's okay to come close and even eat out of your hand. I think you'll find they will be much more relaxed and settled once they have their "own place" Now they have to constantly be on guard just like the wild ones do. And never feel that they are safe even when on the water, predators will even swim for a good meal of duck.
