Pekin Duck Club!

how can I make my pekins and muscovies not lay eggs in the water?!?!?!?! how do I keep the other ducks from eating the eggs and how do I keep the chickens from eating their eggs??? thanks in advance

I can't help you with the laying in the water. To be honest, I don't understand why everyone is eating eggs. Aren't you giving them oyster shell? At least a layer feed? Egg eating is done to get the calcium.

@Miss Lynda I am sooo glad to see you here!

Hi! I'm hoping someone can help me, I'm having a problem with one of my 3wks (today) Pekin ducklings... One has been not wanting to walk and havin a hard time getting up for about a week now. I read up on niacin so I've been giving niacin in their water and putting some mixed with water on a small peice of bread and feeding them that too so I think they're getting enough of that but it's getting worse and the vet said today she thinks it nutritional cus everything looked ok as far as legs goes. I'm feeding them chick starter from tractor supply and putting the save-a-chick electrolytes in their water too. The vet said I needed game bird food so I sent my husband to buy some today and that stuff has 30% protein in it when as of today I know they're supposed to go down to 16-18% so I haven't fed them that yet, I also read that too much protein can cause joint problems too so I'm at a loss as to what I'm supposed to do with this poor little guy! I don't know what's wrong with him or what I'm supposed to feed them...I'm thinking Purina duck chow?? Anybody have any suggestions as to what could be wrong and what I'm supposed to be feeding them better than what I'm already doin?

@aprilgantt - what type of Niacin did you get? I use brewers yeast (hard to find at stores so I ordered from Amazon) not activated bread yeast. I put it in their food since they wear/waste a lot of water. I put 1 tablespoon in 1 cup of food. Did the vet say why you need to feed game bird food or for how long? Please try to post some pics of the duck's leg & any attempted walking?

I'll tag some other members that may have more info & ideas.

aprilgantt,

Is it plain niacin, not no flush, not timed release?

Try a different brand or get B complex and use that with the B3 level guiding dosage.

The little one needs 150 mg B3 per gallon of water. Is that how much you are giving?

The game bird food can be mixed in with their regular food. Start with one part game bird and four parts other for a week and see how it goes.

Thiamine is sometimes a missing link, so the B complex or brewer's yeast may be better than straight niacin.

Hey guys I am new to this site but wanted to share a couple pics of my 2 amazing Pekings... Their names are Donald and Daisy... Currently in lock down with my first clutch in the incubator... Should be any day now... Started with 19 down to 12 so hoping most of them make it since this is my first experience incubating... Would love any tips!!! this is my drake Donald... He is my love bug and this is my sweet girl Daisy... Though of course Donald had to photo bomb lol
They are so cute and I wish I could hug them. Great shots of their webs on the grass.

If everyone is eating eggs, I would guess and say it's food source. They aren't getting enough food to eat or it could be bordum if they are all locked up In a small coop. But it could also be because they are lacking something. Could be protien. Could be calcium could be a number of things. I would start with the coop is there enough room for everyone. Then check the food. Do they constantly have food down, then check the ingredients that's in the food. Protien calcium. Etc.

I agree with Lacrystol Do they have forage time out of their pen? to me this is very important chickens and ducks get to act like they would in a natural setting. I have never had an egg eater thank the good Lord mine get lots of forage time and also get dried meal worms every day which is protein plus food down all the time in daylight hrs. . and for calcium extra Oyster shell on the side. I do realize some can't let their flocks outside of their pen for various reasons so then it's up to an imagination to make their pen have as many places to forage and root around in as possible.Boredom is not good for them.
