Pekin Duck Club!

aprilgantt,

Is it plain niacin, not no flush, not timed release?

Try a different brand or get B complex and use that with the B3 level guiding dosage.

The little one needs 150 mg B3 per gallon of water. Is that how much you are giving?

The game bird food can be mixed in with their regular food. Start with one part game bird and four parts other for a week and see how it goes.

Thiamine is sometimes a missing link, so the B complex or brewer's yeast may be better than straight niacin.

I used reg niacin not the flush free or time release kind, got it at GNC and I was putting 100mg in a gallon or maybe a tad over that cus I was crushing it and separating it to 5 equal parts. The vet said her site said they need 30mg per lb a day so to give him 45mg so today I put about 50 a little water and squirted it on a little piece of bread and he eats all that, maybe that will help! I didn't put any in the water today cus I didn't wanna overdose them cus I already have the electrolytes in the water and that has niacin in it too but it don't say how much. I have a different vet calling tomorrow that does know ducks, cus the first one didn't know about ducks she says after I GET there! He can order me the Purina duck chow or tell me what he thinks is wrong I guess.

I'd like to be added :) I just got 12 baby pekins this weekend. I can see this is going to be a fun adventure.
@Jen Powell Welcome to BYC, of course we have to see pics of the 12 lil ones

I wouldn't be opening and closing the bator very much it could harm the one trying to come. And the ones still yet to come.be patient and look in on them frequently without messing with them to much.

I'm gonna have to do a little more research on Pekins, for some reason, I get a LOT of people having hatching issues with them. Which to me is strange because they don't have small beaks like a call, they don't have a dehydration issues. Wonder what is causing Pekins to have such a hard time??

@CyndiD

Hang in there we have to give him at LEAST 24 hours from the time he/she have externally pipped. If we go in to soon, we could have yolk absorbing problems, as long as he keeps yawning and breathing he'll be OK. Just keep that humidity UP..

do you remember approximately when he made that external pipped? I though you said yesterday morning, which this morning would be the 24 hour mark. but since he is malpositioned he may need a little more time... I think tonight we should be OK to interveen. I like to give him as much time as he wants, remember the due date isn't until tomorrow.

And of course so far, Im reading they are pretty easy. LOL

Here they are. That was the box we had them in the first day we got them. I built them a larger box on Monday, and already need to make a new one (they have soaked it, playing in their water). I made a less-splash-prone waterer, using a little tupperware dish with holes in the lid so they can drink but not stand in it, and that is sitting on a plastic tray. They love the water! :)

Use a jug with the lid OFF (that is important for safety if they get inside). Make a hole big enough for their head to go in, and about the level of their back, below their neck. Replace weekly as they grow. You can add a hole on each side since there are 12.

it's a very short tupperware container. I don't think they would fit in there with the lid on. It's tall enough for their bills to get in, but not enough for their bodies at all - the holes are not large enough for them to slip inside either. :) I will definitely have to change it as they get bigger. I wanted it to be short enough for them to reach it (It's about an inch tall, and maybe 5x5 wide, it has 8 holes around the edges, and no hole in the middle. I didn't want anyone of them to try to drink from the middle and get stuck.
