Lord, no hatching bug for me!! I currently have a hen that isn't eating or drinking. we battled a sour crop all winter and now I believe it is just blocked. she is miserable. I work until 11pm tonight and as soon as I get home I will be in the basement with her making her throw up and massaging her crop in hopes that something will dislodge. my girls just turned 1 in march. I'm not ready to lose one yet!!

My husband is on the job getting something for the ducks to dunk their cute little heads! woohoo!

on another note,.. what I have read so far says that the pekins are super noisy once they are quacking. is there a lot of truth behind that? My neighbors are going to hate me lol

Neighbors may love some fresh eggs and put up with a bit of quacking to get some.

Sorry about the sick hen. I know there was a few years back a recipe floating around on here for a rescue remedy for sick birds. Not sure if it would help or not.

Checked her leg and foot and didn't see any visible wounds, see any swelling or feel any heat. Felt from her hip down to her toes and she didn't seem in pain anywhere I poked or prodded. I'm at a loss, maybe she just got a slight sprain? I'll give her a day or two inside to rest her leg and see if that helps :-/

Try an Epsom salt compress. Dissolve a couple of tablespoons of Epsom salt in a cup of water, soak a clean rag or paper towels, and wrap the leg, holding the duck. E.s. is a laxative, don't let her drink any solution.

We have 4 pekins 3 female and 1 male. 1 of the females was hatched under a chicken and rejected by that hen. She chomped her to her skull. We thought she was done for. We brought her inside and one of our dogs was very very concerned about the baby. She survived the first night, and the next week, but she was alone. She became friends with the dog. They slept together. Ate out of the same dish. She laid her eggs on his bed. He was stolen almost a year ago and she still calls for him. When she gets out she goes to his outside bed and lays her eggs. I think when you have no other duck friends they will find someone to be friends with. They seem to make very strong bonds. I still look every day for our dog, not just for the kids but for Chomp his duck friend.

What a great recovery. So sorry to hear about the dog. That's just heartbreaking.

Hi anna!!

I am new to the pekin world. I am a chicken mom, but my husband and son thought it would be a nifty idea to bring home 6 ducklings for my 30th birthday.
my question is about the water,... I have them drinking out of the waterers that you can buy at tractor supply. should I just have a bowl in their pen? the people at Tractor supply told my husband to NOT let them get their nostrils in the water. I found that strange since that's what ducks in the wild do, but who am I to say.. Is this why they seem snorty?

Hello and welcome! I think I would call that TS and ask for the manager. Those employees need to be educated.

Glad to hear you didn't find anything serious. It very well could be a sprain. I hope she feels better real soon. Keep us posted.

What a precious pic, and could very well be a sprain, how does she get in and out of the pool? I had one hurt his leg from jumping down off the side instead of using the ramp, he limped around for about a week before it got better.

Both ducks are happily making a mess in the tub and "sick bay" is all ready for them not sure how happy they are going to be about being cooped up in a box for a couple days. The frequent baths should help make up for it.

I would also add some no-flush, no slow acting niacin to their water. Maybe give them some chick electrolytes for about 2-3 weeks and see if the leg problem doesn't improve with that.
It could be as simple as a supplement deficiency and it won't do any harm to them if you do add it to their water to see if that helps. You should maybe repeat the niacin (I would go with a high dose of 500mg/gal water) once every other month for a few days. Again, it
Doesn't hurt or harm them but vitamins and supplements like niacin is also usually in their food.
My one duckling actually was to the point to almost not walking anymore last year. Now he is for and healthy, and a bit spoiled by mama too. Lol

We got them from tractor supply at 4 days old. They will be two weeks old tomorrow. I'm glad I found this site right away as we were completely misinformed about how to care for them. I'm kind of annoyed that I bought a lot of unneccesary stuff for them.

Anyway, I basically read this whole thread so I feel a lot better about the care of them! I plan on moving them outside late April. Or whenever the snow melts.
