Pekin Duck Club!

I like that last one, they are on a mash type food right now, and they put SO much of it into their water it's crazy. They are a bit over two weeks. I will keep the heat lamp on for them and keep a little hut in the run so they can get out of the weather and be warm as needed.

I looked at the coops at tsc and really liked them for my chickens! Then I read the reviews on their website about most of them and decided to build my own chicken coop and duck run. That's a lot of money to spend if the things are going to fall apart. I have taken from each of there designs things I like and will put them into what I build.

I bought mine from pine creek structures on rt 10 in plainville. It took 2 weeks to get here but it was delivered and put right where I wanted it.

One day we will built what we want, but it was a quick solution and it's held up well over the last year.

I think i'd go to the feed store and get some Terramycin [probably spelled wrong]  eye salve and start using it, treat at night and take food and water away over night so the salve stays in the eye and she doesn't wash it out. How about the Veterycin are you using it at night too? That does not look good and needs immediate attention.

I flushed it last night with saline and dabbed on the Vetericyn. This morning it looked better but was foaming a little. I flushed it again with the saline and dabbed more Vetericyn. I added some sav-a-chic vitamins to their water near their food. Figured it couldn't hurt. I also gave them a smaller bowl of water away from their kiddie pool for fresher water that I can change more often then the pool. She had it open a lot more this morning than last night. I'm going to buy some apple cider viniger to add a little to their dunk water bowl outside and probably take out their kiddie pool for the time being so she's not dunking her eye in that nasty water.

Keep a close watch on it, sure don't want her to lose her vision or infection to spread. Good idea to keep her from putting her face into dirty water right now. I use ACV about 2X a week in all my flocks drinking buckets it's help heal any problems and is also a good tonic, get the kind with the mother in it. Glad your seeing some improvement.

Hey question for y'all. when you give your ducks brewers yeast and garlic, how much do you tend to give per feeding. mine are only a week old right now but I finally found some yeast. I just want to make sure I'm giving them the right amount (not to much, but enough) to get the benefits they need from it! Thanks!

I had been thinking about this, so I wrote down some things. Here is what I came up with.

Okay, two tablespoons of brewer's yeast contains 10 mg of niacin, based on this page http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/custom/1323569/2

The guesswork is in how much water a duckling actually ingests in a day. If a duckling actually drinks a half a cup of water a day, it would be getting (16 cups in a gallon, 32 half cups in a gallon . . . . 150 divided by 30, more or less) 5 mg of niacin from water with 150 mg niacin per gallon. Which would be about a tablespoon of brewer's yeast.

…Note - these are some guesses. But perhaps you will find them helpful.

Thank you! it at least gives me something to go by and try to determine the correct amount.

I just purchased my first duck we now have a flock of 3 chicks and one pekin, I am so excited to raise these guys with my kids, the duck Howard is only a few days old and the chick are 3 weeks old they all seem to be getting along great. Please add me to the group.

U shld get another duckling. They are very social & tend to do better when there is more than 1 :).

She may have a splinter in there. I'd do some soaks in Epson salt water 1 cup to 1 gal of warm water let her stand in the bucket both feet since its easier and just hold on to her try to keep her in at least 5-10 mins each time. After she has soaked use some noesporin or triple antibiotic on the area, and when you can get some colorless iodine[walmart carries it] or CVS after a good soak and dry use the iodine paint top and bottom then let it alone for a few days, then check and let us know what it looks like. Hopefully the ES will help draw out any thing that maybe in there and the iodine will clear up any infection. Keeping her confined like you are will help keep it cleaner. FYI don't let her drink the ES water it is also used as a laxative.

Update - we have been soaking, iodizing and antibiotic twice a day. Today plug type sore came off. Foot is not as swollen she still favors it but seems better. After doing some addition research found it sounds a lot like Bumble foot. See link http://urbanhomestead.org/journal/2007/09/09/157/

Thank you Miss Lydia for the sound advise!
