That is very dangerous. I would remove her from the group right away, really right away. I'm not sure I've ever heard of that kind of ratio, but I can tell you a lone duck with 7 drakes is not likely to survive for long.

I don't usually do alarm things for people because I try not to be judgmental about what people are doing with their ducks and just give some gentle advice, but please, please get her out of there if you want her to survive. (I mean like tonight, like right now.)

I agree with jade, I'm the last to judge ppl but, honey, remove her asap. She's going to get really hurt or die!

I need help with a very sick Pekin female. 1.5 years old, less than 2 kilos in weight, 70,000 white cell count, has been on Azithromycin 0.8ml for 10 days now and doesn't seem to be improving at all. Stopped laying eggs about 4-5 weeks ago and is now listless and clearly very sick. I think my backyard is healthy as she has a 3 year-old mate who seems perfectly healthy and happy.
PLEASE ANYONE with ideas...I could use some help with this.

I started seeing some red flags yesterday after I filled their pool. They were trying to mount her and almost drowned her. I have removed both her and the male mallard to a seperate pen. I hope to get ducklings from them some day I got them all as newborns and they were not sexed so I had no way of knowing if they were male or female. I am noticing the pekins getting drake feathers and the 3 chocolates are getting green heads so i assume they are males. Should I try and trade a few males for females?? Im new to this so any advise is greatlyTha appreciated!! Thanks!

You did the right thing. If you had left her in there, they very, very likely would have shortly killed her. You're a responsible owner even though you're new to it.

If you can trade drakes for ducks, you should. That's usually very difficult if not impossible to do. You really need to keep her separated from all but one similar size drake if possible. Even one Pekin drake mating one Mallard duck is potential bad news simply because they're on opposite ends of the size scale.

LOL. No offense taken at that at all, but I wanted to let you know I am female. Jade or Gina is fine. The only reason I'm even mentioning this is that I'm not sure you know I'm female. (If it's just not including me in the "ladies" part, that's okay, too. Sometimes I don't include myself in that group.)

I lucked out and ended up with a male and female mallard so they are in their own honeymoon suite...lol I really am considering selling my 3 pekins but it gets very cold here in the winter and i kind of need them for warmth to keep the other ducks alive. I am brand new to this and have read every book i can get a hold of but that can only teach you so much. Thanks for your advice!

You need to make sure that the mallard drake is not overmating her - so just keep a close watch.

You have some options - simply keep a drake pen - it works for some, but not for everyone - because sometimes drakes will abuse each other. But sometimes they get along just fine as long as there is not a female close by.

Rehome a bunch of drakes

Bring in a bunch of females.

I know that not every option is workable for everyone - but those are the ones I can think of.

Remember - her life depends on you protecting her.

Don, did you get the Azithromycin from a vet? If you did, or if you have the option, please get her back to the vet. 2 kilos is very, very small for an adult Pekin, and her white count is very high. Has she always been that small or is she at 2 kilos now from weight loss?
