Pekin Duck Club!

Good morning, everyone! I stopped visiting here because there was tension that wasn't ending between members. So, I will just update everyone that has been around for a while.
Lily and Jojo are doing well. They had a son and a daughter about seven months ago. The children were in a brooder with some chicks that were a week older. For some reason, they adopted the chicks. They even refrained from swimming for a while. It was pretty funny! The chicks even laid on the ducklings' backs! It stopped being funny when I realized that they would not bond with their parents at all. But, I thought it would change.
The son moved on to lead his own flock with a pond. The chicks (oh, and the turkeys) are in a breeding pen. The female (Janice Joplin) spent most of the day trying to get in. I almost gave in, and let her. Almost. Then someone dropped off three drakes about a month ago.

2 Mallards and a Pekin. Now here is where it gets interesting. I had Lily and Jojo who finally got the Muscovy girl (Aretha Franklin) to pretty much bond with them. Then there was Janice. With the three boys, everyone is sticking together for a majority of the day! My flock is happier with them!
Sadly, they can't stay. That is obvious. I am watching for overmating, and all seems okay. I am holding out because of the harmony that the boys have brought.

*Sigh* good luck. It sounds like you're overloaded with drakes.

Well the winter vortex has arrived, we've had a foot of snow in 4 days and the temps are rapidly dropping. I bought a heated dog bowl that has been keeping the ducks with some fresh water and we have upped their extra's (kale, scrambled egg and warm oatmeal).

My pekins really aren't very impressed, first they informed me someone had stolen their pool and now all the grass (mud puddles) have disappeared too. They are spending more and more time in their coop hiding from the evil white stuff and the wind. They still complain first thing in the morning but aren't so quick to come out and tell us about it.

Its going to be a long long winter.

Last winter, Lily and Jojo were the only two outside. This year, they have five other ducks keeping them company. As well as the chickens. Past experience tells me that the chickens will be hanging out inside after a few more snows though.

Duck Norris wants to know why I won't let him in to eat the dog and cat food, mess up their water, poop on the floor, and pillage the house. He keeps knocking with his bill.

hey everyone,I've got a question for y'all. My boy Riley has started acting quite aggressive lately(meaning it started today) he's been attacking me, and my mother all day, but just last night he was acting the way he use to as a baby. yes he's normally aggressive in the morning( protecting his hen LD.) but he normally mellows out. today was too cold for then to go out so we kept in the dinning room for the day. what could have triggered this sudden change in personality?

@RileyandLD More than likely hormones how old are they? Drakes usually begin to feel frisky around 4 months on and can get aggressive . It's time for tough love. When he starts attacking you or mom you need to real quick pin him to the ground your not hurting him but you want him on his belly with head facing away from you, keep one hand on his neck so he can't bite. I find straddling them works for me. I hold down till they stop fighting then I let them go if they come again aggressively they get pinned again. I also will keep them away by putting the broom between me and them. And I have even pushed my drake away from me. I am not being aggressive enough to hurt but just making a point that I am not going to be submissive and let him treat me like one of his girls. I have a great relationship with my drakes but I will not tolerate one being aggressive. You can also try picking him up making sure to keep him from biting and walk around with him for a while what your doing is being the dominant one not him. If we are consistent they will learn. So many give up on their drakes and either they end up dumped somewhere or get sold off. I am not saying you'd do this but it
happens alot.
