Pekin Ducks Love Their Food!!!

Its a bit to late in the season for a duck to go broody. I had 4 hens, all different breeds, go broody at the bringing of Summer. 2 of which took quite a while to break. We got into a system-
Walk into the house, get within 2 feet of the broody. "Quaaaaak chatter, chatter" she would say. I'd put my hands on my hips and tell her it was time to go. She'd look at me, tuck her head and reluctantly leave the nest. Bickering as she left. 😂
I'de then take the eggs, and do it again the next day.
I usually let mine sit, but only 1 hen. If your not the first to go broody, you don't get to sit. Especially when the first hen hatches 10 ducklings lol! 😍🤪
Ohh, okay! That’s good to know! I want to raise baby ducks, but Lord’s Willing, maybe very soon! When do they typically start sitting (or going broody?) I had to remove a broody chicken this past Sunday, she certainly wasn’t phased by the time of year! But I’m still so new to duckies! Thank you so much for the information!!

Glad I could help! Mine always go broody in Spring or Early summer, it is a bit late, but that doesn't mean that they won't. And be careful what you wis for, I had one hen sit and hatch 10 ducklings, thats way more eggs than I thought she was sitting on, and then 3 more hens tried to go broody after her lol! You may just end up with loads of babies!
Monkey see Monkey do lol!

Oh goodness!! I certainly don’t need 800 baby duckies (but I would love them!) We have rabbits too, and started out with 2 of them... now there are 12! I Can get behind the mentality of “Woah now!” Way more than I expected! But I have lots to learn about our quackers, so any info you feel like sharing, feel free! I’m listening’!

Pekin ladies are unlikely to sit: lay and leave is their wont
Hahaha, okay! I have since started gathering! They definitely were not sitting as of right now! Our Pekin drake has just recently “found himself...” so I’m wondering if that will change the girls’ mind about sitting?!?!

It was my understanding that pekins, as a breed, are not generally prone to broodiness. Obviously there are exceptions and they can/do,but it's likely not as often as other breeds that weren't bred for meat production.
This is just anecdotal since it's been my experience, but I've had pekins for almost a year and none of my girls went broody or even were inclined to show interest in nesting. 🤷‍♀️
Maybe you'll get a hen who is really interested in being a mommy.

Thank you so much for the insight, and for giving me hope! They lay everyday in a beautiful nest (except for one who I’m convinced doesn’t even stop waddling to lay her egg 😂🤣.) They made their own nest out of the hay in their pen, it’s a huge round deep nest, but I don’t know if that means a hill of beans!! Ducks are interesting for sure!

My pekins will make a nest to lay their egg, but after the egg has been laid, they couldn't care less about it.
"What's that? Food? Food!" ☺️
I'm convinced that's all they think about.

YES!!! Even after they get their food it’s like they look at me say “annnnnddd?!?!” They can tear up some pellets! 😂😂 So the nest can pretty much just be their comfy little place to lay and walk away, right? Awesome sauce. 🤣
