Pekins going bow legged

I feel horrible, I don't know what I'd do if I lost mine. I didnt know they were jumbos, I've heard its common for jumbos to have leg problems, I'm guessing bc of the weight.

Yes they were bred to put on weight fast so they can be slaughted young. But no one took into consideration some of us love ducks for other things besides our tummy's and we need to research about the breed before we bring them home, Pekins seems to be the worst for leg problems because of their size and should be started on Brewers yeast from day 1.

I hope wannabe can get some Brewers yeast into her ducks they may never have straight legs but maybe if she keeps control of their weight they can still have happy lives. I'm for giving them a chance.

She's already giving them niacin, though. I know everyone's telling her to get the brewer's yeast and yes, it is a fantastic natural source of niacin and riboflavin, but I still think she's going good by dosing them with crushed vitamin supplements. Granted, I don't know how much she gives them, but still.

Oh okay I though she was only using Brewers yeast. Maybe Super B complex?

I was originally dosing niacin. I was dosing 100mg per gal of water. I started dosing brewers yeast only 2 days ago. They've been dosed the niacin since about 2 weeks of age.

Unfortunately no avian vet available and financially it wouldn't fly :(

These 2 weren't noted as being "jumbo" pekin but given the rate they've grown and how much weight they've put on it wouldn't be impossible. They seem to be gaining at least a pound a week.

Wow a pound a week. Mine are Pekins and I thought they grew at an alarming rate but not that fast. Mine aren't fat, they actually fly, make it about 2 feet off the ground for a few yards. I hope yours show Improvement, as miss Lydia said, a chance for a happy life. Your trying everything you can!

Looking closer during water time today I think the bigger of the 2 actually may have a sipped tendon in one of its legs. I notice one of his ankles is far more inflamed than the other. I also notice that what looks like the tendon that would normally run along the back of the hock joint seems to go to the side of it. This is on his worse of 2 legs. The other is standing higher on its legs, and while still a bit pigeon toed seems to be able to get around. That one trips occasionally, but is mostly ambulatory.

I may be a bit off on my "1 lb per week" estimate, but when I weighed them at 2 weeks they were both just shy of about 2 lbs. I haven't weighed them in a couple weeks now but will try and get weight to see.

I just weighed the rougher of the 2 and he's 2.15lb at 4.5 weeks. I certainly over estimated their weight, but they're still much bigger than the khaki campbells.
