Hi! This is my Midnight Majesty Marans, which is basically a mix of Marans that Hoover's named. She was hatched August 21st 2019. She lays dark brown eggs regularly, although her shells are always SO incredibly rough (calcium issue?) like sandpaper almost. My question is about her crop that has had me concerned for a while now. It seems to stick way out and gets saggy at times. So far, she hasn't shown any signs or symptoms of crop issues, other than the visual concern. Does her crop look odd to you? I've been wondering about a crop bra. Is this ever used as a preventative measure in odd looking crops or is it best for me to wait and see, with a chance that she won't have any issues? Thank you for your time!

Also, I should add that her crop is NOT full in this picture. I'll try to get a picture after she has her nightly mash.

My MMM looks likes this as well, but her crop feels fine (she likes to sit on my lap, so I check every day)! She also lays jumbo, dark brown eggs that are rough, so I don’t know if these are just traits of the breed or something else. I’d be interested to see what others have to say. They sure are pretty girls!

I agree, I would leave it alone and just monitor her.
I've have had several hens that looked to have large crops at the end of the day and their crop was always empty by morning.

Might want to put her in a crate overnight, with no feed or water.
I put them in after dark off the roost, then check first thing in the morning before releasing or giving feed/water.

I like to use a fold-able wire dog crate (24"L x 18"W x 21"H) with smaller mesh(1x2) on bottom of crate under tray.
Then you can put tray underneath crate to better observe droppings without it being stepped in. If smaller mesh is carefully installed, tray can still be used inside crate.

I have a seven month Austrolorp with the exact same thing. I actually just posted about it because I was wondering if the birdie bra would be helpful. I have tried it on her and she absolutely hates it just concerned if they’ll be any issues if I don’t intervene at all. How is your bird doing?

@Nani87

Mally, the bird in my post is 15 months old now and she hasn't had any problems with her crop so far. She is a big girl and has filled out even more as a hen and her crop isn't quite as prominent, but still large and saggy. Her offspring, a cockerel that is half silkie and half Marans Mix (Mally's mix of breeds) also has a large saggy crop, just like her's but he hasn't had problems in the almost 4 months he's been hatched. I wish you the best
