Anyone use a vet for their birds? George wants me to take the turkey hen to a vet, but not sure how to find one. Don't want one that'll just say "put it down or butcher"because I might be likely to get nasty.

Betta..... I SUGGEST you call and ask to speak with their "Aviary Vet " a new doc they have to replace the owner soon, he may tell you what you need without a long drive, just explain how far away you are and that their are NO aviary vets there.... They are so nice and helpful in there!!!

Anyone know of a chemical (or anything) that will kill the grass quickly? I never did get the new garden 100% grass free last year, and this year I am extending it. I have a ... Grass hopper? Umm... MANTIS! That's it! A little tiller (Caterpillar?). LOL. Anyway, I have a small hickey jigger, but that was about useless last year. So? Any suggestions?

I sent an email to the Penn State ag extension president (or senior something or other). I hope he returns my email quickly, has any ideas or a number to a vet or something. I love these girls and don't want to just butcher her out. They're good turkeys and I don't want to lose her. :(

She went down yesterday. I think possibly the tom was too rough on her. Her hocks are all scuffed up, plus the wingtips, and some gravel marks in her belly. The main problem is her leg, which is swollen and now I believe out of place. It doesn't seem to curl the toes as much as the good leg does, when you flex it. You know, the natural reflexes or whatever when you flex a bird leg, the toes curl all up? Well, that leg only does it a little bit. Maybe a slipped tendon, but the achilles SEEMS to be in place (from what I've read and my best abilities), but I think it's out at the hip. The swelling and my inexperience prevents me from feeling what's wrong up there, but it's bruised black. Now, it's out to the side, even when I hold her up, she can somewhat move it, but it's out to the side. I believe last night, it popped out of place, since it wasn't to the side until this morning. She wasn't walking on it, and I tried to lay her on her good side last night, but this morning it was splayed out. She's a 20lb BBW hen. Most would say "ah, just butcher her", but I love these turkey girls, and even the boyfriend is up for vet care to get her back to health (he loves them too).

I've had a young rooster slip a tendon before, his whole right hock and upper shank swelled to double the size of my finger. It was very hot, sore, and he displayed Extreme discomfort whenever the area was lightly touched or bumped. Unfortunately, due to underlying health issues, I lost the roo anyways (He ended up having multiple tumorous lumps in his organs/head. Poor guy

He always seems to have a few nuts loose) So, that said, if the bird isn't showing signs of that around her hocks you're probably right. If it's black and bruised, my worst fear would be that she broke/tore something up there. Is her hip hot/swollen?

Thank you. She's going to have someone call me back. I have a little bit of hope now, even if they're far away. A call back is FAR better than "umm, I'm sorry, but I don't even know who to tell you to call." This is a pretty big agricultural area here, WHY do they not have avian/poultry vets here?!

What kind of plant is that? The chickens don't eat it? I would like to "decorate" my run. I saw a run where a guy had a huge Y shaped tree limb that he fastened to the top and bottom of the run. The chickens were sitting all over it. Some greenery might be nice, too. I mentioned in another post that I bought wild flower seeds to plant around the coop and run. If I am going to work hard to make the coop look nice, I don't want the run to look like some mud puddle.

You don't have probelms with predators and that low fence in the mountains? Here where I am in PA, I am going to have to cover the entire run because of the hawks.
This is OUTSIDE the runs... see the X ? the run are in the rear of coops, so I dont have to tromp through crud to get to the coop lol, nice and clean stones good for snow rain, but very hard on summer bare feet to and from our pool! LOL
BTW it is a varigated pussy willow! Which my puppies tromped all over now!! BRATs!

Completely missed that big blue X in the other post. duh!

It's weird. There's a distinct line between the black bruising and the normal skin tone. Basically, it's her leg, but where it connects to the pelvis, there isn't bruising. Her leg is very hot, but it's hard to tell if it's way hotter than the other leg (these birds are always very hot to the touch, and my fingers are too cold to tell much of a difference). The leg itself (scaley part) is actually COLD. The swelling is so bad that the circulation is minimal. Can't exactly do a capillary refill check on her, but you can tell by how it's cold.
