Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

So I'm sitting in my living room (front of my property) and one of my red hens is cackling her fool head off out front. So I go out to see what the commotion is. I find her sitting in the window box right outside my living room window, under the overhang of my rhododendron......along with 7 eggs!!!! Since she's in the process of the laying number 8, the little stink has been at this for over a week.....

So....are they any good?

yes, float test. Been there, done that. Although there are so many chicks here now that I usually throw the 'found' eggs back to the chicks. Very good for them.

Baby chick is standing now. Really not looking right, kind of lopsided. Possibly splay let too. Think I'll pop it into a cup

How does a run that is supposed to take one or two hours to extend, take 10 hours?!?! The walls were already built. It was just putting on the wire, slapping the thing together, put a door on hinges, and throw the roof on. Granted, we discovered that the ground needed dug out (grrrrrrr) but that took half an hour. So, seriously? How did putting the walls up take about 8 hours??? Anyone else have a problem when building?

We were still getting the roof up, but the kids NEEDED to get out... Okay. I couldn't wait to see them in their new run.
How many beers were consumed in that extra 8 hours of work?

The run looks good.

Quote: Thank you to EVERYONE that likes the run. I am very excited about it. No beer. The beer IS kept in the fridge in the coop (with a lock to keep neighbor kids out. As well as naughty chickens!). It never occurred to us to drink beer since we were too busy guzzling cool aid and water. We did reward ourselves when we were done. We showered (duh) jumped on the Harley, and rode to Altoona for a very late (9P.M.!) steak dinner @ The Lonestar and a Whiskey Sour each. I then slept the whole way home.
I hesitated to remind DH that : A. I need another run for the side of the coop/second coop (the chicks were moved in yesterday. Wanna hear a story? Give me a minute), and B. The extension allows for 13 chickens going by the 10sq ft/bird rule (does everyone follow that rule, or is 8 enough?). There are 12 over there, but chicken math is a reality.
Story time! The second coop (shed is divided in half) isn't finished, but I had to choose between making it work, and cleaning the brooder. So ... I went to catch the chicks. Said chicks have had little human contact in the past week. Two jumped out of the brooder, and began running around the garage. The garage is HUGE! Two stories, a sunken floor (or whatever it is called). It is about 20 X 15 in the front, and 15 X 40 in the back. The Plymouth Rock got caught trying to sneak down the stairs to the sunken part. The other (a Barred Rock) finally got caught in a corner. "here Chicky Chicky" got them to my hand, but not long enough to grab them. It took about twenty minutes to catch them.
After getting "all" the chicks, I had a problem. One was missing (Again!). I listened. I looked. No chick. I walked away... Then went back,, and lifted up the top of a rabbit room (works as a nest box when quarantining hens). There she was! That took another ten minutes. The girl is sneaky! She will be the winner of every game of keep away.
So I get her in the dog carrier, and off we go to the big girl coop. One chick just did not want to come OUT of the carrier.
Last night I saw them sleeping in the corner closest to the big chickens. Made them happy, so I am happy.

Motorcycle Chick: You have been busy haven't you? Sounds like my life. Today was the rooster chase. I had decided my RIR's were staying penned up today so that my poor penned up babies could roam the yard in safety. Problem, I forgot and let him out, remembered and the chase was on. Very undignified in a bathing suit, kids laughing (at me or him I don't know)caught him after 10 minutes and my 2 year old let him out. Chase back on. Good Grief. My babies are so happy to be out though, it was well worth it.
Huge excitement also, my first Serama egg, and it was fertile. A couple more months and I'll be hatching them, YAY!!!
I thought my baby Valentine looked so pretty walking around the yard today I just have to post a pic. Not a great shot, but I'm a proud Mama.(He's my avatar, they grow so fast)

Today was my day to clean the duckling brooder/give the ducklings a bath. So I bring each of them up from the basement 2 at a time, drop them in the rubbermaid tub i've filled with 6 gallons of water....they happily chortled and dunked and drank and flipped...till they were waterlogged. Then I took them out and put them on a beach towel...that they promptly attempted to graze on....then wander off that to explore the great big world of the kitchen...and then off into the dining room! GAH! 2 of those sneaks were good at hide and seek. Now they are all safely back in the brooder with fresh shavings and fresh food and water...YAY!
