Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

My birds must strongly disagree with the weatherman.
Just got a call from a frantic husband, there's a bird walking around with 10 little one's following her, apparently somebody has been missing for awhile..
I do know of a bird sitting but she is still there and only has 3 eggs because I took the rest from her..
Silly birds, chicks are for spring...

If you have ever been to my place, you would understand how things like this happens.

That's awesome! It's amazing what those birds can do. Wing, is there any chance I could have a few extra fertile eggs when I pick up chickens in December, If my girl is still broody? If you have any to spare, and of course I would pay your for them. I don't care what kind they would be, but I wouldn't be babying them, I would just throw them under my broody and hope for the best. Sorry if that sound stupid or cruel. I'd like to break her, but not with torture in this cold.

My little silkie I got this spring squatted for me today. That means she is a she right?

That's an excellent sign! If you get an egg in a few weeks, we'll know for sure. :p

Welcome welcome!

This morning when I put food in with them, she jumped off the egg and started mothering her babies and trying to teach them to eat and drink. That's the first time she's left the egg and lost obsession with it so I took it and put it in the incubator. Hopefully it still has a chance. I need a new name though. A cold name won't work for this one since it didn't hatch on that super cold day like the others. Of course this is all "if" it hatches. I need a name revolving around being late or delayed lol

Hope the little one makes it! How about Tardy for a name?

I was gonna suggest Tardy too! Tarde (Tar-day) is late in Spanish

It seems that my lone egg in the bator has a tiny little crack or something on it, too small to actually see, but there seems to be a drop of liquid forming there. I wiped it off once thinking it was maybe condensation or something though I knew the humidity wasn't that high but I just noticed it again. Has anyone encountered this before? Is it definitely a bad one?

Maybe... :/ It's probably rotten. Sniff.

For when you need a LOT of coffee!!

I got an email about the hatch-along. I was so excited to do it this year! Oh well. I now get to see coops across the country, and talk to other crazy chicken people. I laughed when a waitress in Tennessee told me she was beginning a coop, and already has 30 chickens and a bunch of ducks. I don't think many of us are that bad! I only had 8 when I got my first coop done. Six when I got a brooder.

I hope you guys are doing well! I am actually headed up to Buffalo, but not until Monday, and it will be 60* there. I see you guys are getting a warm up too!

..I will be sooo good to go then!
Thank you! I have three pullets (about 24 weeks old now and no sign of eggs yet) and they are a Silver Laced Wynadotte, an Easter Egger and an Australorp. We actually leased 5 acres of mountain land behind our house so that they can forage and scramble around the mountain (and to comply with zoning issues) and they seem to love it. I wonder if they might be laying eggs on the mountain instead of in their coop, but guess I'll have to do a bit of hiking to find out.

Never ever thought I would have chickens, but I can't imagine not having those silly girls in my life. This whole chicken universe is a fascinating place and I'm learning so much from BYC and its members and it is especially nice to see so many people from PA.

that is awesome you have all that land!!..or i should say , they have all that room. Wyandottes are very slow to mature..it took my girls between 8 & 9 months to lay..yeah, really long for eggs! I am not as familiar with your other breeds... i am sure others here are more knowledgeable!
This is a great thread, lots of very nice people and very good in-sites, wouldn't be here if it wasn't so.

the "bad" ones were stinky when i did the bator thing...

It didn't smell repulsive but it didn't smell good. I decided to bag it. I want to do an eggtopsy to see if it developed at all and how far it got since this is our first quitter but I'm afraid of the smell that it'll probably have lol. I put it outside on the screen porch in a bag so maybe it'll freeze overnight and we can open it early tomorrow. I definitely don't want a rotten egg exploding in my incubator the first time I use it. That would be bad luck for any future hatches I have lol. Incubator did good though for us first run. Held steady at 99° all day :)

There's a chicken in my house that hells at me every time I try to move her away from the baseboard heater to put her in her cage..

She needed a good foot cleaning to find out why she was limping, to cold out so she had to come in...problem with this is that I live 3 miles away from the farm...was really hoping I didn't get pulled over or even anyone look in my car since I stopped at the store on the way home... ain't everyday your passenger is a chicken, she sat calmly on the seat and was sleeping when I came out of the store...

Now to get her caged for the night, she really likes that heater

Sounds like something we would do! We made a trip to camp this fall with 2 cats, 2 dogs and a crate with 4 chickens.... the dogs and cats are normal, the chickens were being traded off to someone along the way. I quit worrying about the odd looks we get when traveling with our menagerie... actually it gets amusing. I had DH bring in my favorite old rooster for some TLC this afternoon... just some special treats and comfy time for him. He ended up napping on a bench for a bit.
