Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Finally outside enjoying the nice weather today. My little one is coloring with sidewalk chalk. The coop is open, all the birds are out running around, swear I'm hearing the Sound of Music soundtrack playing in the background. Next thing you know this girl comes over to check out the coloring scene. God I love country living!

I talked to my supplier for meaties today, they are saying broad breasted turkey will be getting hard to find, they are sold out up till the third week of august.. you might want to think about a pre order if you are looking for them.

Anyone just looking for a few, I have 19 bbw that are 3 weeks old, well started & getting very fat on 26% feed. I would be willing to part with a few of them if anyone is having trouble finding just a couple of diners.

I'm convinced my girls are laying somewhere and I can't find the stash. The rooster has been going to town the past few days...

Yeah:

I have three blue layers...only on has been consistent laying in the nesting box...today I found two blue in the box.... (a first...and none in the spot I found yesterday)....sometimes these birds are just crazy,,,who knows....

The true story of the Chicken Gun. Too funny not to share!

Sometimes it does take a rocket scientist!

Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch standard 4 pound

Dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space

Shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the

Frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of

The windshields.

British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the

Windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and

A gun was sent to the British engineers.

WHEN THE GUN WAS FIRED, THE ENGINEERS STOOD SHOCKED AS THE CHICKEN HURLED OUT OF THE BARREL, CRASHED INTO THE SHATTERPROOF SHIELD, SMASHED IT TO SMITHEREENS, BLASTED THROUGH THE CONTROL CONSOLE, SNAPPED THE ENGINEER'S BACK-REST IN TWO, AND EMBEDDED ITSELF IN THE BACK WALL OF THE CABIN, LIKE AN ARROW SHOT FROM A BOW.

THE HORRIFIED BRITS SENT NASA THE DISASTROUS RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENT, ALONG WITH THE DESIGNS OF THE WINDSHIELD AND BEGGED THE U.S SCIENTISTS FOR SUGGESTIONS.

NASA RESPONDED WITH A ONE-LINE MEMO -- "DEFROST THE CHICKEN."

(TRUE STORY)

that post about the chicken gun/ windshield testing.................HILARIOUS!

--------------------

I am looking for just a few chicks.

I would love to get

dark brown egg layer such as a Welsummer or Barnevelder or Cuckoo Maran

Blue egg layer: such as Cream Crested Legbar or Ameracuana.........or another blue egg layer.......

if there is an interesting white egg layer.........like a Barred Holland or Dorking...........

other possibilities are: wyandottes of different types, buff orphington, or olive egger---but I understand they are hard to sex at birth...........convince me of something else?

and one other chick.

I cant have a rooster.

I also dont want any breeds with feathered legs.

I will be adding these 3-4 chicks to my existing 3 chickens.

I have contacted Dennis...........and am keeping in touch with him...........currently his hatches are down a bit due to the recent cold weather snap we had a bit ago........

wondering what people might have?

thanks in advance!

Just some thoughts on your comments Don't know anything about barnvelders but welsumers lay beautiful dark eggs. So do the black copper marans, but they have feathered legs and feet.(But not all do) At first I didn't think I was going to like that, but found that I think they are really cute .And they seem to have been fine in the winter and the wet with them.
I don't have cuckoo marans but know several people who do, and all have the same complaint. Their eggs aren't really darker than a medium brown. Some are speckled. They aren't the best layers, but neither are my BCM although the color on the eggs is fantastic. But if I were to get more dark egg layers I would probably opt for more welsumers
One other advantage of the welsumers is they can be sexed at hatching which should make it easier if you can't have roosters. I have some olive eggers, but some of them are feather legged too. If you get ones with welsumer they wouldn't have feathered legs. Even the ones made with marans aren't all feathered legged.
Cream legbars have the advantage of being sexable at hatching but they're expensive and I'm not crazy about their comb size, a concern for the winter in your area. Rose combed legbars which should be more winter hardy are being developed now. I prefer the combs of the Ameraucanas or easter egger plus there is more variety in the color of the birds themselves.
If you get your chicks from a hatchery you can order girls. Otherwise chose some which can be sexed on looks.
