Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Today we let our extra golden laced wyandotte roosters free range for the first time. Looked like they had a good time. We were working in the garden and decided to try to get the roosters back to their run. They didn't like us trying to corral them and took off. My cat was in the way and they chased her and she went running and got all puffy. It was so funny. Poor kitty. :lau Oh and I got my first mosquito bite of this year :(

Lol, our neighbor got a new kitty, and it was hilarious seeing her interact with the chickens through the fence. She would try to stalk them slowly, and the curious chickens would get closer to the fence. The cat would pounce (not getting through the fence, mind you), and the chickens would be screaming and running away. Happened three times at least.

I swapped eggs. I'm not sure of the provenance of these, but I believe all in the US are from GFF. I thought it would be interesting to "compare and contrast" with Rhodebars. They sure look a lot alike. If I can get more, I'll let you know.

I checked 2 broodies that were in the haymow and found that they had hatched 3 chicks, so I put them and 1 broody in a cage to protect them. The other broody had enough exposure to the chicks that she abandoned the rest of the eggs.

So does that mean 5 Bieles so far? Can ask what you swapped for the BIelefelders? Just curious, because I understand they are not inexpensive.

Welcome!

FINALLY...
Got a call for an interview, I have not been working since the second week of Jan, seems most companies want their workers young.. I gave up on TSC I was updating that one every two weeks and nothing, by every time I went in there I seen a new young blonde girl working. I even set my stuff on the counterss and walked out with one of them, she was more interested in her friends at the door...
Never thought it would be so hard to find a minimum wage part time job....
I can not make a yearly job out of the farm, just can not do much with snow on the ground.

So, the interview is at TSC? They should count their lucky stars to have you interested!

The broodies were hatching free-range "barnyard mixes" - cute little black chicks lacking a pedigree but really good at foraging, esp if raised by a broody to show them the ropes.

I think they are all done now, and 2 pairs of Bielefelders hatched. I traded Welsummer eggs, also in demand because this strain has super dark eggs, though not as "new and rare". The BF eggs were much darker than I expected, definitely darker than our New Hampshires, but nowhere near even the lightest of the WS or BCM's. I will get more eggs in a few weeks because they also want one of my CCL cockerels (Reese line straight from GFF - those are pricy too). When I get more hatched, I'll let you know.

So... I must have calculated the days wrong. I know I didn't put the rabbits together until a few days after I originally planned, but I thought I adjusted the date accordingly on my calendar. Anyway, I thought Saturday was day 31, but she didn't start pulling fur until yesterday (Sunday) and still no kits as of this morning... unless they are really buried in the nest. I should be able to see something in there just by looking in, right? She's also been spending a lot of time out of the nesting box and was happy to eat some kale scraps I brought down to her this morning.

Are the Bielefelders really big? Like, rivaling Jersey Giant tall? I was searching for a really large chicken awhile back and thought these were it, but now I can't remember...

Mine are not very big (at 2 days old, you have to adjust your expectations) and I've never seen an adult one except pictures. There are varying claims as to their size and I'm not sure what to believe, that why I want to find out for myself.

There are a number of large breeds, our New Hampshires are large and stately (the roos, at least). I've seem some very tall Langshans, but they are "leggy" so probably not any heavier than an average roo. I think the Rhodebar roos look heavier than the other breeds. What I'm saying is, big can be height, weight, or some combination. Even attitude can make some roos seem larger than others.

I live about one mile from the PA border. Does that count? Haha! Thank you Fisherlady for inviting me to this thread. I'm in Ohio and hour from Pittsburgh.

There are a few of us over here... I'm less than 10 minutes from the OH border in Beaver County, PA... an hour or so northwest of Pittsburgh.

We need to meet up somewhere. Have a BYC picnic or something.

They bury them really well in the fur & usually don't pull fur until right before birthing. Look really close for movement in the fur pile. They should be there soon if not already.
