Found this gem on the local yard sale page today for $75 The pictures don't do it justice. The lady restained it, lacquered it, and replaced a chewed board. I'm going to use it for so many things lol. Small breeding pen, integration pen, outdoor brooder, broody pen, and maybe occasionally the rabbit can come outside and use it lol

Wow been away for a week and I am so far behind. Well a,little update on my chicks my girl we thought was a wellie is definitely a dark cornish, and I think one of my speckled sussex names Daisy is a Donald, bigger comb , lots of white on chest area, waddles are coming in, there is no color in the comb or waddles yet but it is huge compared to the others. They are all 5 1/2 weeks old now and doing great. Hopefully I can,get some pics over the weekend to share with everyone.

Wow! Imagine that! Using a rabbit hutch for a rabbit on occasion! Who'd a thunk it?

I will see what I can work out with the seller. Timing is not too important to me. I prefer to hatch (or in this case, buy) chicks for breeding stock in the summer, they need less time indoors and start laying about the time I'm hoping for eggs to incubate.

Question, we have recently gotten in to chickens. We have 3 easter Eggers hens, and 3 chicks, a RIR, SLW, and a Red Sexlink. Our three Easter Eggers came from a hoke with a roo, so I took advantage and gathered some of their eggs along with a dozen from tye farm where we got the hens and put in the incubator, I have a couple hatched out at about day 19 1/2 and 20 today, with several others started. I pulled the first now that she is dry to the brooder. She is fluffy, second has bald spots, (still in incubator to finish drying)

anyone know why?

Any idea why this chick is not growing feathers??? It IS a meat chick so I realize their feather growth doesn't keep up with their body growth and they often have bald spots. But this chick is not feathering out at all compared to the rest of the same age meat chicks. They are nearly 4 weeks old and I'm gearing up to remove the MHP brooder but I don't want this featherless chick to get cold.

There can be quite a bit of variation in the feathering rate even when all of the birds are from the same source. To keep fertility rates up they probably keep a ratio of 4 hens per rooster and even if you get 10-20 birds you could theoretically end up with chicks from 20 different roosters....
We got 50 this spring, from the same source as our last 4 batches, and like the past groups this one has a couple that are just slow to feather. They don't seem uncomfortable at all and don't really hang around the heating source even though it is still available

Notice the differences in feathering in this pic, the one on the left has beautiful coverage even though he's a bigger bird and the one on the right has hardly any back feathers....

Worked outside all day today....took the camera out for a few pictures. Brownie and Laverne's chicks are getting big and the are right in the middle of any activity going on. Dusting parties and sunning sessions seemed high on the list of preferred activities today, though begging for treats was frequently done also!

I hope you can imagine what I am talking about!
PVC bends to make a hoop (I think we all know that, but just saying). Between PVC, some 2X4's for weight and deer netting (cheap, easy to use and isn't sharp like chicken wire)  with a tarp covering it, you can make a coop. OR! A tote with ventilation can be used as a coop too. If you need two totes, they nestle for easy transport.
   I am trying to be helpful. Sorry if I am not.

You sure can, when the time comes. It's small, about 4'x4'

Do anyone else's hostas look like this? They seem to prefer the regular over the variegated.

And why oh why is there a chicken on the roof of the coop? Here's some random photos. Dheltzel, your Rhodebar is a healthy girls and a great layer.

I've never seen hosta bunch that tightly, but there are many different hosta, some variegated, some not.

The chicken is on the roof because chickens do that.

The view is better. Plus, they can then get somewhere else.
