Ana has her babies out and about this morning! I went out to feed everyone and heard all kinds of peeping in the coop. I opened the Nov side door and there's Ana and all 6 of her babies running around looking for food lol. I didn't have my tablet with me at the time so I didn't get a picture, so far she's being a wonderful mom and defending those little babies from everyone while showing them the food and keeping them warm. One of the little lavenders looks like it's going to be a trouble maker though. It kept running off from the group to do what it wanted and then came back and was running circles around mama, teasing her lol

And BTW... Ana's mama, or maybe Aunt, hatched 6 chicks yesterday herself....another generation of Silver Pencil Rock chicks.

We had quite an experience with the ducks last night, In our yard we have a 20x10 man made pond that of course the ducks love, they typically go from coop to pond and back again pretty much only straying away if I am out in the yard and they think im going to feed them, or if someone turns on the hose. Anyways, it was raining last night when I went out to do my rounds, the ducks were in the pond, they saw me coming with an umbrella and took off, gone. The little buggers ran off past their coop and into the woods. After assuming it was the umbrella that scared the heck out of them I left them for about half an hour, they still hadn't returned so I had to go out in the pouring rain, umbrella free, and lore them back out with treats. They are such boneheads sometimes.

Umbrella? Yeah, not going to happen here, especially when carrying for the animals.

I have been known to hold one for my wimpy dog.

I rarely even grasp my rain jacket even though it's next to the door. I will throw it on if I'm going exploring during heavy rain and checking the flood waters (the joys of creekside living).

I get wet a lot.

Congrats Anne:

Where are you looking to move? There is a Chester Co 4 acre property listed on CL....(barn no house)....

and the answer to 'broody' is 'hatching eggs'....(its a known fact)

Of course, why didn't I think of that? :p

They're so cute when you have a broody raising babies!

yep, no more umbrella's for me...got mine (left laying on the basement floor for a few months) and went outside last night....well a bunch of really small ants had built a nest in it....so when I opened it up....they dumped all over me...major PIA....

Well folks:

Just paid the paypal for some red dorking hatching eggs....really looking forward to getting a breeding quad of reds going!!!

We just picked up our new coop! I'm very excited. I am fairly sure we're going to have to add on to it in pretty short order, but I think it will work for now as we ready to move our little brood outside in the next couple of weeks. It is a pretty little commercial coop that has the ability to add on expansion pens. Between the hubby and I, we should be able to come up with some sort of homemade solution that is more cost effective. Does anyone have any suggestions for plans that might be available online?

I understand your suspicion with those combs, I would need a good look at neck feathers to offer an opinion because I am not familiar with the youngsters of the breeds though. If you put a couple of fingers under the feathers at the base of their neck and lift up slightly to get a good look at the ends of the feathers...blunt or rounded ends are normal for hens and pointy ends are normally roosters. There are a few breeds which the feathers are the same, but not the breeds you have.

Those feathers don't usually show up until around 12 weeks old though right? That's the earliest I've noticed them.
