So I had to bring Hedwig into house tonight. Last night we opened the two sides of coop so the new ones could sneek over. Went well all day no problems but we went to a soccer game and when we got home Hedwig had some more feathers pulled out and a few scratches. So brought her in. She seems happy right now on my kitchen table with some treats..... Can I wash her up? Like wash cloth and soap to get a better look at her back? Or would I do better with a tub of sand for her. I put so much blue stuff on I cant see.

@fisherlady they took all day to hatch but I think I finally have your chicks lol

That little poult is so cute! It looks like it has chocolate sprinkles on its back. I'll be curious to see how it looks when it grows up also!

I have a 7 gallon garbage for my regular flock and 5 gallon bucket for my babies in bathroom. Non of my family is happy with me lol. Hoping eventually we'll go nose blind..

Haha! That wouldn't fly here, but I may be able to get away with it in a basement or garage...

Lol. On the security camera it's going to look like a drug deal. "I swear officer, it was just some chicks in the box!"

I think it is best if you let her heal for a few days before you try that. Glad you have her isolated though. Does she seem active and alert?

Okay should i put more blue coat on the new scratches. They aren't bad but she is bleeding a bit. She is very alert and talkative. Talking to me and her reflection in window. Almost purs when I pet her. I know EEs are normally friendly but I think someone was very hands on with her. She seemed fine all week temperament wise. Always up and busy when I checked on her. I didn't see any of my big girls pick on her. One of my spangled bantams was picking on one of the little hens but not much. I'll happily hang out with her in house for awhile! The only hens Ive had were the ones that came with house and they like me but not overly friendly. She did drink alot when she came in. I have some nutridench I could give her too.

Glad she is being friendly with the handling...sometimes compliancy can be a sign of illness but from your description and the pictures it seems to not be the case with her...she does look pretty bright eyed, it is the bushy tailed part she is having trouble with, lol.

Never hurts to give a bit of nutridrench and a healthy treat such as a scrambled egg or some tuna when you have a bird in for treatment. It is good for their energy and birds like treats, so they will associate their trips inside with good memories also instead of just injury memories.

Clean the scratches as much as is reasonable, we use gauze bandages soaked with warm, soapy water. You can use cotton balls or qtips but they may snag on feathers and shed a lot of fibers into the wound. I do like qtips for applying greasy ointments though. They don't really seem to shed when coated with triple antibiotic.

A warm bath is always an option, and I will do that when numerous smaller wounds are present, but use caution when dealing with gaping wounds, make sure the abdominal cavity isn't opened, if it is you want to avoid washing contaminants into the body cavity that can later be a source of infection. Having a helper makes the bath process easier but it can certainly be done by yourself. I like a 2 sink system for bathing, one with soapy water for the bath and another filled and ready with rinse water so you can just dunk them to rinse.

Triple Antibiotic (without pain relief), Poultry Aid and BluKot are are go to surface treatments.
You could get her a hen saddle to cover the problem area until healed.

She will most likely end up being your friendliest hen...

Remember that this is still a rare occurance, given how many flocks are out there and the extreme results of infection. With 50 - 90% (some say 100%) mortality, it is unlikely to go unnoticed in any flock. Even if an unscrupulous breeder tries to still sell chicks from an infected flock, he only has a few days to do so before the rest will sicken and die. This is not a long term, chronic thing like most of the diseases you might encounter.

I wonder why they kill the survivors each time. It seems like selective breeding of the survivors might create chickens that are like waterfowl, just silent carriers.

Good point. The chicks are in Tenn. about an hour away from the Lincoln county site. I think I am more worried that the state will do the same as Alabama and Georgia and restrict the movement of poultry. I know the breeder is fantastic and I trust her. I was unaware the illness was so quick acting. I feel horrible for those who make a living selling chicks/eggs.

We may have to run to Altoona first thing in the morning. PM me your number (and real name lol) and I'll give you a call tomorrow once we know exactly what's going on.

Her real name is 'Chicky MissHatch-a-Lot, Keeper of the Broodiness'. Fisher is just an alias.

Haha! This wouldn't be our first chicks in a box exchange there! They might get suspicious!

I can't wait to see how this poult grows out! Made I'll name her Sprinkles or Ice Cream. She really does look like she has sprinkles on her back lol

Keep cleaning it up and putting blue kote on it. I think maybe putting a large hen saddle on hen might help protect it while she heals too.
