Victoria--I am so sorry for your loss. I feel the loss of every pet as deeply as you do and I still am sad about even having had to rehome my favorite 'roo--a spectacular cuckoo lavender Orpington. ( I am right in the borough and my tolerant neighbors have their limits).
I can't imagine how difficult this time is between that and the trauma your sister is going through.

Hi all! Sorry I’ve been absent for awhile, having a very rough time of it. My sister just came home after being in the hospital since 2/20 after a car accident. She is minus her right leg and having some difficulties adjusting. Also, my beloved Jersey Giant rooster Hero passed away a few days ago. I love all my birds, but Hero truly was my son, and losing him was a tremendous blow. He was only 2 years old, and I still weep for him every day. I doubt I’ll be able to stop anytime soon. :hit

I’ve collected eggs for a week now, a friend is going to hatch them for me. Desperately praying that Hero left at least one good strong son to replace him, and a few nice girls. Would anyone be interested in a few chicks? Some would be Hero’s, some Danny’s (an Easter Egger). The moms are Brahma, Cochin, Easter Egger, Marans, and Rhode Island Red. If there are any Jersey Giants, I will probably keep them, since they are so rare.

I love you guys and missed you a lot. Praying for better days ahead!

Rest with Jesus, Hero. Mommy will always love you.❤✝💕😭🌹

I love my babies. The welbars are startlingly beautiful! (Thank you, Dennis) Does anyone know anything about Gold laced wyandottes? I was trying to replace the pretty hen I got from Jack, but these two kids (mypetchicken) have so much black in their plumage. Is there any hope of them molting out prettier?

I’m sorry, I will say it once and then let it pass: telling someone who is grieving for her dead son that he has no soul is NOT a “difference of opinion”, it is cruel. I’m all for difference of opinion, but when a snake bites you, it’s a snake. I really didn’t need that attack.

Hey all! I live in Lancaster County PA and are needing to re-home our bantam black Silkie rooster...his name is Nugget (chicken nugget 😂🤷🏻‍♀️) Nugget was born in October...We received him along from with our other bantams ....they were supposed to all be hens 🤷🏻‍♀️....he’s super handsome and nice we just don’t have enough bantam girlfriends for him to “date” as much as he’d like to.
Let me know if you’re interested!
Thanks so much!

What beautiful babies! Yes, I believe your Gold Laced Wyandottes will molt out better with age. My Silver Laced never look quite right until they are about 8 months to a year old or so.

I've been away for a long time and spent the last hour or two catching up! You guys sure talk a lot!
:pop
I have been busy with the online schooling for my 2 kids (on top of working from home), but it is going well, even though it takes ALL day... I am enjoying this time with my babies, and can't wait for summer break!

I have a few chicken questions:
1. How do you know if they have worms? A few had poopy butts and I trimmed their butt feathers so they aren't pooping on themselves so much. I inspect their poop every once in a while but never see worms, but the occasional watery poop has me a little worried. No other health issues though.
2. How long can chickens live for? I have quite a few old ladies that I'm surprised are still here.

Thank you!

Only true ways to know about worms are to see them in the poo or have a float test/fecal test done by your vet. Runny poop is a common sign of a digestive upset due to any number of causes from new feed, spoiled feed, nutritional deficiency (rare when feeding commercial mixes), overheating and drinking too much water (summer problem) or intestinal upset from worms. Spring is notorious for worm problems with the muddy conditions.

If you don't have a regular worming schedule you should plan to use a wormer or have a fecal check done before the birds begin to loose condition.

I have a few 8 year old hens going strong.... so anywhere from 3 years (some production eggers die young from reproductive tumors) to upwards of 10 years for some lucky ones (usually barnyard mutts are the healthiest group in my experience). I love are old girls... they are the best.
