Question for everyone.... I think I've finally convinced DH to build me another coop so I can get some bantams! I would like a nice variety, but am wondering where to get them? I need a frizzle... Top on my list, would love some silkies and who knows what else? Anyone have several kinds that they'll be hatching/selling? Could probably go to TSC or order from hatchery.... Thought about going to an auction ... Any advice? Thanks in advance!!

Silkies and cochins make wonderful pets, but you can get lots of different breeds in bantam size.

My personal opinion, I would stay away from the auctions.... there you are mainly getting birds that someone else considered "not good enough"

it's very possible that I met you at tsc, I am always there during chick days to pick up the no sales.....they called me last year when they had chicks more than 6 days and needed the bins for the next delivery....I was getting those chicks for like a quarter a piece....told them on sunday when I was there that I can not do that this year...

Hubby always has straw, not sure about barley though, he is putting together a list of people to call at harvest time to see how much they want, you gotta talk to him about that one..

Auctions are more for pet and production or cages and equipment, if you really want to scrub and bleach the sin out of everything. I used to buy my eating eggs there too. Just can't beat a $0.25 dozen of eggs if you don't have any layers (heck, even if you do!) For me, I'll pick up scovies at some point in time, and a pekin drake, but just about everything else is off limits until I get into rabbits. My cornish cross, my BBW turkeys and my pekins all came from auction (pekins were eggs). They were all hatchery birds and in the case of pekins, hatchery quality. But when you're just starting a self-sustainable flock for your dinner table, you don't really care if the eyes are the wrong color, the beaks are a smidge skewed or whatever.

As for bantam pets? Try OEGB or serama as well. LOVE those little birds, but if you free-range, watch for hawks and don't step on them. Also watch for birds flying to get on your shoulder! They're like puppy dogs, lol.

Ok. So, I had my five chicks set up in a galvanized steel tub but then they were trying to climb on top of each other and escape. And they were all pecking at the sides of the tub and I was afraid they were going to smash their faces! So, I moved them to a cardboard box with high sides and now they are pecking at that!!! What the heck?? Can they get out of a box by pecking the sides? Are they trying to tell me they hate me and want to move out?

I am so flipping scared I'm going to kill them because I clearly know zero percent of anything about chickens... Besides they are delicious with buffalo sauce.

Lord, help me.
Heat, food and water....That makes happy chicks.
Is this something only done in harrisburg? Can you take this online or anything?
oohhh, do i need to submit mine to that link? Whats the Prize? I guess I could always click on that link? haha!!

Monday.. ugh... Morning ALL!
It cannot be taken online unfortunately.
Bah, I was crying in my wine last night with Sally, so I will share so others can learn from my stupidity! Don't ever ever ever follow the directions - especially when Sally tells you something completely different! Listen to Sally - Sally knows best!

So I loaded up 2 incubators, one 7 egger and one 20 egger. The 20 egger has 3 welsummer eggs and 2 marans and the rest some EE eggs from a friend (no big deal if they don't hatch). The 7 egger has 4 welsummer and 2 marans and 1 EE. Temperature and humidity are good on the little 7 egger. Temperature is fine on the big 20 egger. However, the humidity has been on the low side - following the directions to the letter. So about 9 days in, I weigh the eggs and most in the 20 egger are 10% lighter. So now I am jumping through hoops to boost the humidity to try to save something.

Hopefully something hatches in 12 days. 8(

And those **** marans have the habit of being very tough to hatch.

Hopefully you drove. You'd need the booze if you ran

I probably shouldn't have ignored the following text message to my cell phone:

"From: Roasting Chick Baby
If you want to see cute little peeps, increase the danggone humidity, it is like Arizona hot in here!"

Always buy 50% more alcohol then you need, that extra 50% comes in handy before noon the next day.

You've got me on the list?

Haha! I'm not real short, but my house and the old house were both built for very tall people. I can't touch 2/3rds of the cabinets in my kitchen without crawling on the counters, lol. Everyone is saying that they're buying me stools so they don't get a call to come take me to the ER, lol.
