Let him give it a shot. If it doesn't work out, it could be an awesome duck pond!

Has he kept fish before? It can be a rather enjoyable pastime, much like chickens. Some fish become quite tame and even recognize people (still like chickens). I don't think I could bring myself to eat a fish I'd raised. I think it'd be a lot easier to eat a mean rooster than a fish. I guess if the fish attacked me . . .

Sounds like you better raise oscar then. Those suckers will strip the meat right off your finger in 1 bite. 12 rows of teeth!! Good eatin though. My grandpa catches them in Florida all winter long.
 
Beaglady, just to let you know, that forum you sent me to early is great, I will be spending alot of time there, I even registered,,,,,reading one now on how to use all the dang black walnuts each year,,,,I end up letting the squirrels have them, I get so mad at them, with the staining of my hands and the hard work to get to the meat it was never worth it before,,,may have to give it another go next fall

If you get the sticky points figured out so you are not put at risk then I think it is a cool thing to try...
If you get your husband to clear out the barn to make room for tanks and pumps you may be able to squeeze a breeder pen into a corner!!!

Oscars (and Piranhas) are over rated as aggressive fish. If you put the same size oscar and bluegill in a tank, the oscar would be dead in a day. Now if the oscars were a pair defending their young, that would turn things around for them. Down in the canals of south FL, the oscars lead their fry around like bass or channel cats would up here. Of course they have all sorts of fun fish down there that have escaped into the wild.There used to be groups of aquarists that would go remove the exotics by the thousands and sell/ship the desirable fish to people up north. I doubt it paid off, because I haven't heard of that for years. Maybe they decided it was like trying to empty the Mississippi river with a teaspoon.
