Regarding the schedule of pullet delivery I posted earlier, when they advertise pullets, are they the fluffy chicks or older birds? I just had a horrible thought of having a coop but needing a brooder also if they were just referring to female chicks and not slightly older birds.
Not that I have a coop yet.
LB:

From what I've been told, chicks do not eat or drink for the first 24hrs. So, that is when it is best to ship them....if you are buying from TSC or any of the feed stores, you will need a brooder set up. I started with a laundry basket then after a week moved them to a dog crate...in general and at this time of year, it will take about 8 weeks til the chooks can handle 50 degree nights outside...pm me and I'll walk you through the process (though many folks on here know more than I). If anybody has a better understanding, feel free to correct me....

PS: Pickering Feed has got their Australops(sp) in but nothing else....

I was afraid of that. Well, I guess I'll have to use the spare bedroom and figure out something.

My chickies will be sharing my multipurpose room with my 2 parrots. We'll see how that goes! :) I suspect the parrots will ignore them, except for the one parrot imitating the peeps. :D

Thanks again for help Stake from another newbie! I am supposed to get my chickies there this week.... :fl

The West York Agway just got in a bunch of pullet chicks. Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps, Barred Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Easter Eggers and Red Sex links.

They have ads posted on the York Craigs List for each breed. http://york.craigslist.org/grd/4337775204.html

They get their chicks from Mt. Healthy. I got about 25 from them last spring and they were all pullets. They get different breeds each week and will special order for you. They don't have minimum amounts like TSC.

Raising them from chicks is the most fun part!
Well, seeing them hatch and fluff up is really the most fun, but raising them is almost as fun. Soon, you'll be offering to raise chicks for other people, just to get your "chick fix", then you will know you've reach the point of no return.

concur...its fun to watch them grow....my baby BOs used to jump up on my arms when I reached in to feed/water/clean....they'd craw right up my arms and perch on my shoulders...and, it pays dividends when they are adults (imho)

Just wanted to share we came up with a couple names so far. Still having a hard time naming the twins and the other yellow girl lol. I swear they already grew some today since we brought them home! Just a question, the two red and the two yellow ones were listed as assorted pullets, any clue what breeds they could possibly be?

I built 2 portable pens this weekend. Each is 4 ft square, made as a hoop pen, and has less than $25 worth of materials, but is light and sturdy. I'm very happy with them, but forgot to take pics! I tried telling my my aching muscles "pics or it didn't happen" and therefore they have nothing to complain about, but they are very insistent that they did indeed build them. I will get pics next weekend.
This is cracking me up! Sorry folks, I'm a bit behind!
Wing here tak u mind off of your worries, your good at this kinda fun stuff..... Anyone think of a celebrity look alike on my 6 wk old CCL pullets?
Kramer?

YES!! Kramer, of course. But call him/her Cosmo to add a little mystery. Cosmo sounds more gender-neutral too for some reason.
