It doesn't sound ridiculous at all... in fact there is a thread on here which basically was started for this reason. Sally Sunshine started it over a year ago and it is still active with those of us who have processed still helping folks who are starting.... it is now a very long thread, but it is very informative and if you read the first 2 months or so of it you will probably get most questions answered, those you have and those you never thought to ask!

that is a very good thread!! I enjoy reading it...even if you don't have issues...it lets you see where others are coming from.

I seen some black birds chase off and attack the hawks. That was something to see! There are way too many critters out there that want chicken :(

I have another critter that is causing problems here. The dreaded gypsy moth caterpillars are back. The last time they were in epidemic they killed about 40 trees in my back yard. It's horrible when they come and eat everything and you hear them eating and pooping and fall out of the trees on you

Are there any fowl that will eat these pests?
chickens don't?...they eat everything else..well, except carrots and celery

....
Critters is wht my birds are 95% in tractors if weather is nice. The ones fenced in are too close to house for most predators with the dog and cats roaming. I do wonder if the harsh winter has increased attacks. This year was the first in 10 that anything went after my birds
. They got 5 of my daughters market turkey's for a. 4 h project.

Well just dropped my son off at football practice. A 5 to 10 minute drive took 30 minutes. They have Rt 80 shut down in the Poconos. Please avoid the Poconos if you can. Rt 80 both directions are shut down due to a hazardous spill. I live on a cul-de-sac that is right off of Rt 611 where all the traffic has to go now :( I just hope it will be cleared up by the time I need to pick my son up at 6pm.
football?....i am confused now. hahahaha, sorry barbie, you know i am always half there anyway

x4 on the black bowls....heavy duty rubber and only about $5 at TSC......

On another note....mr fox came back for a visit this morning...fortunately I was already awake when the chooks sounded the alarm...I banged the screen window a couple of time and he took of running....my glw lost a few tail feather but was not bitten....so far its fox "0" and me "4"....I guess I will have to be extra vigilant over the next few days cause he will be back...
those bowls are great! The one i have to feed the layers is big enough for all of them to stand in..hahaha...They are the best especially in the winter..stomp-plop-done!

Good luck on getting that fox Stake...it sounds as if it's den is close by. Have you ventured out to see if you could locate it? I wonder if it has pups it's trying to feed...

When we lived in Perry CO, there was a fox den in the woods behind our house, in an old stone knee-wall. That pair had pups-kits whatever...the game commission had stocked pheasants around the property, we were in the middle of two great-big corn fields, they were literally shooing and kicking at the birds to get them off the road-not nice...anyway..we knew between the fox and the farm cats these goofy birds didn't stand a chance. Over the next 2 days, there were multiple feather piles around the house .....we would just get glimpses of red/orange..knew the fox were eating very well that week!!

I have mixed turkeys at the moment and serama, but they quit laying. They are very finicky birds.

Hi Sharron, I use pesto sauce with tortellini or gnocchi because they are heavier pastas. The light, fresh pesto sauces compliment them well, but you could use pesto in other dishes as well. My favorite recipe is from Fabio Viviani and is: 3-4 cups packed basil leaves, 2 cups extra virgin olive oil, 1 cup pine nuts (or walnuts could be subbed), 5 cloves garlic (I hope you like garlic), salt, pepper, 1 and 1/2 cups romano or parmesan cheese. Combine all but the cheese in a food processor until mixed but still chunky. Add the cheese and pulse til combined (maybe two or three short pulses). Again the sauce can be frozen. Try it! It is a great way to get rid of all that basil. I envy you. I have terrible luck with basil.

I have a small pot of basil on the deck now that has been ok but I never get enough to make pesto.

But that is what the farmer's market is for.

Tonight I'm moving 25 five-week old chicks from the extra duck pen I've housed them in temporarily for the last two weeks and into the big chicken coop tonight. My ducks are becoming a bit more territorial and today was the first time they harassed the chicks a bit. It's because the older chickens have been coming around more near the ducks, I think.

It was my intention to move the chicks out anyway during the dark moon so tonight will be the night!
