I can say I am almost envious with all this egg talk. But my layers are just 5 1/2 weeks old and I still have to get the layer coop and run done so I can move them from the chicken tractor that I use for my CX meaties. I have 24 CX that are 3 weeks today (and bigger than my layers) that need out of the brooder soon! Looks like a chance of rain the rest of the week that will put a damper (pun intended

Hey, I have a question for you all. I got 25 CX meaties 3 weeks ago and one of them is definitely a runt. I actually have her in a separate brooder as the others were literally walking all over her.

I was going to cull the runt, but with an outcry

from my kids and some friends, I’m going to give her a chance.

It does seem kinda weird to go through extraordinary steps to save the life of a chick that in 5 weeks could be in my freezer. So my plan is to put her in with the layers soon if they will have her.

Does that sound crazy?

Doesn't sound crazy at all. I have frequently told my DH I wish I could find a breed of layer who is as friendly and calm as the CX we have raised. We often have at least a handful of each group who are downright friendly and follow us or the dogs around and will come right over to sit beside us if we sit on the ground.
A lady I know had CX in with her flock and they free ranged. On butcher day one of the hens managed to avoid being caught so my friend just decided to let her stay with the flock till next butcher day. Needless to say the hen never did get butchered and I know she had her for at least 3 seasons and said the hen ended up being one of her best layers.
If you do put it in with the flock just watch that it doesn't over eat so it will hopefully avoid developing Heart Failure. It would be great if it does well with the rest of the birds!
Good Luck!

Talked hubby into a trip to Cabelas in Wheeling tonight. Glad I did, found a 21.5 All American pressure canner/cooker in the bargain cave and got it for $200. Got the new rod/reel combos I wanted for the boat also, along with a number of smaller items we needed. So was glad we went.

Thanks Fisher lady for the encouragement.

I am really concerned that the runt is really developmentally challenged. It constantly is trying to go under its hatch mates like it would a mother hen. Here is a picture showing the difference in size: (well I tried to upload a photo but kept getting an error)

And sounds like a good time at Cabelas. I can easily kill a day everytime I go there.

May be a problem with BYC on the picture. Folks couldn't upload on the farm photography thread today either.

It isn't unusual for the smaller chicks to huddle under larger siblings. We have 3 chicks who were just left by there broody mama and the 2 smaller ones are now sleeping under the much larger one and it seems to have taken a parent like attitude and watches out for them.

We have a question. This is our first incubator hatch. The chick hatched at 10:30 this morning, 12 hours later & it still can't stand on its legs. Is this normal?

Hm... did it take take a long time from pip to hatch?

About 13 & a half hours. It seems to be doing a little better this morning. It's not running around, but it's somewhat standing. When it hatched it had a wet string that was still attached to the chick & the egg (umbilical cord???). I left it go until it & the chick were both dry, then hubby & I carefully snipped it off (the chick was still dragging the entire eggshell around). Other than that that it seemed like a good clean hatch.
Thanks
