Allergy shots can be given at home. I did my ex husband's & my oldest son's for several years. They like to do the first few at the office to make sure you don't have a reaction & that you get taught how & what to do to do them yourself. After that, the serum can even be mailed to your house. You just have to ask.

That would be awesome. I already give myself a monthly B12 shot, so I'm sure I could learn to do it.

Then you are a perfect candidate. Just ask the doctor about doing them at home.

I have starter feed and regular layer feed. Trouble is, the big girls LOOOOVE the starter feed. And the layer feed gets scattered all over the run. It won't hurt the littles if they eat some of the big chick food as long as it isn't the only thing they get, will it? And why do the bigs like the baby food? Does it have chicken crack in it or something?

I have adult chickens, 14 week old chicks and turkeys all eating each others food! I finally got them all in the new run together and not hurting each other anymore. Romeo (our 1yr old roo) seems to be back to his friendly self again. I still don't let my kids go in without me just in case, but since we let the big guy and his gals out to the run extension with the other birds, they seem much happier. We also started sitting with them in the run and feeding by hand again and I think that helped too.

But yeah, we have chick grower, game starter, and layer pellets and they all eat the wrong stuff! I keep putting it all out and figure that they'll eventually figure out what they need or they'll eat enough of the right food that it won't be an issue. Right?

Checking in about our lice problem... I cleaned out the nest boxes really well and sprayed them down several times with peppermint oil and vinegar. I did not put new bedding in yet (they laid two eggs on the bare wood today, one cracked). I wanted to make sure I treated their butts really well before giving the bugs a new place to hide in the straw. When I checked them and sprayed again this afternoon there was a little brown bug in there... Almost looked like a flea, is that lice? I think it fell off a hen when she laid her egg but it was not happy on the vinegar/peppermint wood, I sprayed it again and it died. I assume the nest boxes are the main problem area because Romeo seems completely unnaffected and the poor girls are ravaged. I chased the girls around the run this evening spraying their butts with the peppermint oil vinegar. I was worried it would be too harsh, but I sprayed it on my own arm first (which had a good scratch on it from our rabbit)... It stung a little, but wasn't bad at all. I did not put a ton of peppermint oil in, had a good smell, but wasn't too strong. I didn't want to catch the hens and flip them upside down to do a really thorough job because I didn't want Romeo to get the wrong idea since he's been doing so well with us, but I think I did pretty good considering. The BA was probably the worst... Her poor butt is balding and I was able to spray right in her skin. She was grooming a lot after... Like I really sent the lice running (hopefully). What should I be looking for to know whether or not this is working? How long should I give it before I try again or try something else? Will she be able to clean off the eggs on the feather shafts if this kills a good number of lice? I imagine it will take a while for her feathers to start growing back in, but their poops should get better faster, right? I'm hoping I can get a positive visual by looking at the base of the feathers in a couple days.

From 100 chicken & 13 turkey set from the eggs my kids left sitting in a muddy mess for several days while I was out of town (Tons of stinkers pulled from this batch) I hatched 59 chicks & 3 poults. 2 more were pipped & drowned under the broody (I gave her ready to hatch eggs 2 days ago because she started sitting while I was gone but was not disuaded when I stole her eggs daily for over 3 weeks) when my 8 yr old tipped the waterer in the broody tote & soaked the eggs. So there should have been 61:100. A few more may still hatch. There are about 10 eggs left in the bator. I'll candle them tonight & pitch obvious quitters.

SOOOO...Anyone "need" chicks or poults?? Lol I have over 100 under 2 weeks old & a few older ones left.

emore:

I usually mix a small amount of permethryn(sp) in the pine shaving that I am adding to the nest box areas...not holistic, but, I have not had a lice problem (that I could determine) ....

Hello fellow Pennsylvanians....

Due to an unfortunate near future change in living arrangements, I must now find new loving home, or homes, for my 5 beautiful young ducks :(

I am looking for a pet only, freezer camp free home for these beautiful pets, as I can no longer keep them, and cannot take them with me in my new living arrangement.

We are in South-Eastern Pennsylvania, between Valley Forge and Reading.

If interested, please PM me here, or email me at 'tddockery2 at hotmail dot com'.

Anyone else get walloped by the storm? We have no power, trees are down everywhere, streets closed, hubby had a tree fall on a car at work. Pretty crazy. I've got chicks hatching, thand God for the generator.

Dan, I have a friend who had ducks and will talk to him about yours....maybe he has room for them. We are going thru our own "not sure if we'll still be here in Sept." thing or I would be happy to give them a new home...I don't want to take them and then have to uproot them again....

Blarney, We did not, thank goodness.....it went around us top and bottom, we kept waiting, we got some thunder and lightening, a little rain....but nothing more. Saw on news the areas that were slammed!!!! My goodness, it was bad....Gotta love those generators huh?

You're south of us so you got it worse. We had a "dry" storm. Lots of thunder and lightening but just minimal spritzing. Not much wind either. We ran around and got all the deck furniture in so that probably prevented it from landing here. The high winds never materialized.

We got slammed here. Rain found its way into the window. Fortunately, it was just the porch. I lost power a few times. Fortunately, it didn't last long. I had guys working on my bathroom.

Yep, what you saw were lice. I would check them once a week. The eggs will not fall off right away, but as long as you make sure the adults are gone and keep treating for a few more weeks, they will die off. It also helped my girls when they could get back into their proper dust bathing rituals (they were unable to with the cold winter).

Thankfully no, we made out fine here. Glad you have backup though!
