Hello, my name is Abigail, and I am an idiot.
It's been 5 days since I collected eggs, and I have no idea how long Stevie Nicks has been sitting. For over a week she has been in the nest box, in the pancake position. At night, she was on the roost. I think.

Between heads and tails, I thought I was seeing her on the roost. During the day, I would wait until she was outside to collect eggs. That meant a lot of trips outside. She was still laying though. Sunday was my last collection, and she had laid that day, and for several days before. In the past five days,, she hasn't budged from the nest. I know the others are laying in with her.

So! Now what? In the past, the girls were tamer, and I would break them, or at least mark eggs, and let them have what I wanted them to have. I can't explain it, but I don't want to bother her. Yes, I can fence her in, forcing the others to go back to their old laying spots.
I don't want 12-20 chicks though. More if she laid a few before sitting. Do I pad my arms and hands, and let her get mad while I take all but six eggs (thus aborting the rest, and that is what hurts me) or take all, and replace them with six green eggs I have inside?

Hi it's been a few days on this thread and already had a few pages to catch up on. I just want to say I love BYC. A few weeks ago I found the thread on building ur own Incubator and figured I would try it I just got it done in the knick of time one of the two broody girl decided to quit her job so I had to do something since the other hen already had enough eggs to keep her busy so I put them in the incubator. I was afraid I wouldn't have a hatch because when I found the eggs they were cold well I came home today one was hatching and is now drying off in the incubator. I named him/her kracken so I can yell release the kracken when I let her out of the coop in the future lol kracken is a silkie mix and is very healthy and strong already here is her first picture

I am so excited it's the first time I have ever incubated anything let alone hatch something I feel like a proud mom

Hatch the ones you want not more of what you don't need.

Dress amply protected and calmly take the eggs. Then put the new ones under her and countdown. She doesn't care whose eggs she has. A hen will sit on nothing at all if there's no egg. Lol

Ah! I see we have new victims people here on the thread! Welcome to both (or more, but I see two) of you!
Yeah, I know I should just get it over with. And, I should just replace all the eggs. Know what really gets me? She was messing around the first week of September, and had several eggs half incubated before giving up. I was gone for 8 days, and it seems my return broke her. I waited a few days before using up the last of the chick feed. Now I will have to get more. At least with a broody, I can let her take care of everything. No chicks in the house!

I have a silkie and 2 littles in an XL dog crate just so I can watch them. They will be out in the real world when they have more feathers.

I'm not actually in PA but there are not many BYCers in my area. Im in Western MD in the pinched in part. Cumberland. PA state line is about 15 minutes from here.

I wondered how long it would take.... we have two of her 'sisters' now sharing a nest, due on tuesday... I would remove the eggs and replace them with eggs you want and have marked...
