Oh and about the Silkies. They are kind of nuts, I can't pick any of them up unless they are pinned in the corner, so catching them in the yard and putting them in is not likely going to work.

hey KJ:

Maybe you need to add a bit of Zen to the game....you need to move slow and learn how to call your girls...my two cents....

Try it supervised.
Stay away from the coop so they feel free to go in without you being able to touch them.
Use a big net to catch them as a last resort.
Get them used to the shaking of a scratch can. That works best.

And THAT is why I love Fisherlady! She had my girls (and boy) free ranging with their moms from birth. At eightish weeks old, they knew the drill. A couple of weeks in their new coop, and that was all it took to ensure they would return at night. I did shake the scratch can the first week or so because I didn't like them staying out so late ( I was nervous, what can I say?). Now they are teaching the new chicks and ducklings to go to bed at sunset. It is so nice knowing that everyone is with the program!

Do you free range fence free during the day? I was nervous about it worried that they would run away or something (I never had chickens before!) My ducks are 10 weeks old now and they free range all day, at night i grab the bag of mealworms and they run into their coop to get their treat, I think I am over thinking everything a little being new at all this.

Yes, they are fence free. The ducklings go in themselves, usually pretty early. They are only four weeks old. Sometimes they stay out until everyone else goes in, but that is rare. The adult ducks... Sometimes I have to guide them in before I go to bed. They are really liking the warmer weather! I think the nightcrawlers probably have a lot to do with it too. :sick
