Quote: I admit, I checked out pictures from both of you just to see living conditions of the birds,..I know even the cleanest birds could have any number of things out there.....I have thought about becoming NPIP tested, and just have not taken the time to look into it yet.

I get the feeling Patrick or is it Chad, is gonna be a character, And me, well I am just a 50ish year old hippy that never grew up..(literally...I am only 5ft tall) ...This should turn out to be an interesting day.

Quote: No, I do not worm my birds. I don't see worms, I don't treat for worms. If I let the cats near them, I would be more concerned. The cats may be used to dogs, but since moving in, the cats have pretty much stayed out of the yard. I guess Sturgis is enough to keep them at bay.
Bruce, the bird in question is a Red of some kind. Guessing Red Star. She is from a feed mill. The poop varies, but is normal according to the poop chart. I thought they were molting, and maybe she is. A slow molt if anyone is. No bald spots, but I had a ton of down around the nest box about two weeks ago. Now I am finding some nice feathers laying around (but that could be just the chicks as they are growing.).
Out of curiosity, can chicks have a growth spurt in a few hours? I swear to tell you that the chicks all got huge after eating the pumpkin oatmeal (Popeye with spinach) this morning!
Red seems to have a problem with my sneakers. I have boots, but sometimes I just don't feel like putting them on just to grab a feeder/ waterer. It was the laces he started noticing this past week. Never noticed them before. Guess as the only care taker now, he is taking the job of husband very seriously. I am still holding him, but I am also not wearing my sneakers. It was stupid anyway. I wear them to TSC.

Heather. So this chicken group.....is that that AA for Chicken people? CLA Chicken Lovers Anonymous. we sit on chairs in a circle in a room holding a picture of our chickens?

No its the exact opposite. Its a bunch of people sitting and talking about buying more chickens, showing, buying, hatching, buying, husbandry, buying, and health. Mostly its about increasing your chicken flock. :-)

hoe do you know if you flock have worm? or do you just periodically deworm?

I only spot de-worm. I use Ivomec injectable as a drench, or the pour on. I put some on the back of the head, middle of shoulders, it .20 ml per 3lbs of bird. It will also get rid of gape worm, lice, mites, fleas, and protect against blood sucking flies. You can also use Strongid 7-14 days after to treat the worms the Ivomec didn't get. I also use the paste for horses. It depends on the chickens size, and what I got.

Well crap on a cracker, I swear I answered this!

Patricks, no I'm not from there...well...not exactly..I'm currently ALLLLLL the way over by Carlisle. I started this journey living within spitting distance of the ocean in Toms River, NJ. Then I met the most amazing man online. He convinced me to move to PA. I moved to Reading, as I wasn't willing to move all the way all at once, that seemed safe....then I moved to Schaefferstown (hence the knowledge of where you're talking about) and then to Columbia...and finally here to Gardners. I'm done moving. I'm finally with that wonderful man. We have our 3 acres. We have our birds, and we are happy...well, until I decide I really want that mini cow! :P

I have an email into that Dr. about getting npip. I know someone recently did it, so I'd like to know costs/hassle etc.

And yes, I knew about that "expert" I find it sad that we have 1 poultry expert in the whole state, and he focusses on the big egg/chicken houses, and not really on us little backyarders and our needs. Maryland has a much better system, and actually hosts a learning day for begginers to long-term chicken raisers each year in like March.

does anyone within 30 minutes of me have chicks hatching in the next week,,,I have 3 broodies that I just can not break, it has been almost a month, and I am getting worried for them.......it could even be sexlink males doesn't matter just want to give each about 2 chicks.

dudoes anyone within 30 minutes of me have chicks hatching in the next week,,,I have 3 broodies that I just can not break, it has been almost a month, and I am getting worried for them.......it could even be sexlink males doesn't matter just want to give each about 2 chicks.
Did you try setting a frozen water bottle under them? oldtimers dunk them in cold water too, I have heard the putting on screening dont work but the bottles work great... just a suggestion!!

tried them all, seems to work for a day or two then they are right back at it....They are very determined silkies, so I am just gonna give in and give them chicks..
Funny how timing is seldom right at the right time,,, I had 5 broody hens when I had a limited number of eggs I wanted to hatch,,, now I cannot convince any of them to sit,,, probably because most are molting now.
I'd much rather they did my incubating, rather than using the incubator and having chicks in the house for the colder weeks ahead,,,,,, go figure !
