I have only hatched out shipped eggs, so the hatch rate is very low. The babies lived in my living room by our space heater. I don't have a grow out pen, so my two babies went right into the big coop at 4 weeks old. I have several hiding areas for them and I try to give them their own bowl of food.

I discovered today that in my mix of chickens I have a cream legbar hen. Do any of you raise these? I will be looking for a male in the spring, or eggs to hatch out. I am super excited to make this discovery...I always thought she was a mutt!

Sally, I personally think it's more fun hatching under the broody. It keeps my hands off, I rarely candle (and then stress much LESS) and the very best part is watching Momma with her babies. She continuously shows them how to scratch and find food all day. There is NOTHING like watching one stand on Momma's back and slide down. Truly a miracle.

And here is the first out, Black as night! It's a pretty poor picture, but all I could get for now. I really hope this one has some siblings tomorrow!! These guys are all OEs, a BCMarans covering EEs.


 
20 out of the shell! I am seriously impressed that they hatched with the electric mess up and then no tending to for a week while my little guy was in the hospital and then to hatch when I went to candle and lock down! This is Harmony with the 11 in the brooder, four in the bator brooder and 6 in the bator! My friend gave me the other eggs and they are brahma as well.

The other 8 wont hatch for two days yet (CHADS bcm x comet eggs) IF THEY hatch after this :(

NOTE: ALL but the infertile eggs hatched from the LOCAL EGGS, shows how hard shipping is for real!

The one white polish egg that hatched is all black....I think his head looks shiney cause of the lighting? she said it will be a gold laced polish.... see this pic front left little guy!

the teeny tiny white egg from a friend hatched too!
its a white leghorn bantam!!! how cool is he??? cant wait to see him fluffy up! he is beside small aquarium tubing to show his size lol

AWESOME!!! In the spring we will let a broody have at it, that is if our SLW is good to make them! although not too sure about mutts lol!!!

Honestly? the garage or basement is fine, I use boxes as brooders too, so its easy to set in the bedding add the chicks and clean water/feed dishes and then just put them in the clean box and trash the other box or empty and get bedding in it ready to do again in a week.

When they get to be several weeks old, they can stink, but I have heard fermenting feed reduces stink BIG TIME! On my try list!

A shed or garage with electric so you can set up a heat lamp is best, but in our coop/brooder we have a heat lamp AND a brooder lamp with a 60 W bulb in it, JUST IN CASE a bulb blows, they still have the other smaller heat source but it could save your babies! So I like them in the house for at least 3 weeks even in the summer as the kids have good access to them and so do I... LOL

it takes about 3 minutes to put a layer of pine shavings in a box, add some flat stones for the food and water and switch them over... I dump in the woods, easy peasy!

I've had heritage turkeys on and off over the past ten years or so. We also raise a batch of broad breasted ones for the freezer each year. The heritage ones can make nice pets, and grow more slowly then the BB's. I've never been real successful at getting the heritage birds to hatch and raise their own babies, though I know other folks who have done better with them.

What do you want to know about them?
