Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

My husband came home thismorning, and checked on the chickens for me. He doesn't know a thing about them, so this surprised me. He even ventured into the garage, and gave the hens in the holding pen some water. Those girls are very friendly, and must have been in his face while he was doing it. I am very impressed indeed.

Later he will be going into the big coop with the 18. That includes Cadbury, who is going to sit on his back the whole time he is bent over. Red who is going to want to know WHAT DH thinks he is doing in HIS coop?! And Baby and Penny who will be squatting for him. I also have one Red Star that always wants to know what you are doing.
The feeders need filled, the waterers cleaned and filled, and the water heaters installed. Ten minutes for me, an hour for him. I am really glad he is taking care of me... Even if he did put all the clean silverware in the junk drawer, then wake me to say he made me lunch, and I need to get some sleep.

My husband is not normally helpful, so I am going to take whatever I can get!
BTW, did you know a LF hen can squeeze into a six inch hole? The holding pen/brooder has a rabbit house on both ends. One has the lid nailed open, and that is where the hens laid when I got them. Thismorning I found two eggs on the other end.

, but I don't think it comes with the humidifier?, the thing that holds the water..
No, I haven't purchased the humidity tank. Honestly the hatches I've done so far have had good success rates without it. You keep a certain amount of water in it during the days before lockdown and then increase it for lockdown. I had one hatch already of 4 of 4 eggs set with little to no work from me other than keeping the little water area filled to the line.

I am desperately trying to stay small with hatching. I have a Farm Innovators bigger styrofoam model with a turner and all, but I hate it. No success with it. I had trouble with the humidity levels, etc. Just bought it in the summer and it is sitting in the basement in its box. If I do cave and go bigger I am sticking with Brinsea and getting the 20 egg hatcher from them.

Sound/look like Brinsea is a good brand....been talking things over w/DH, and he actually is making sense...this time...shhhhh, i did not say that! Anyway, going to hold off on the eggs/hatching adventure for now,

...and stick to the "plan A"...find nice juveniles around spring..start that way, "better to lose a toe than a whole foot". Plus I just don't have the set-up for eggs; room, equipt.etc...I am also in the process of putting the coop together, adding shingles & other "things" to a "cookie-cutter" coop(one of those kits)..just trying to make it "better". I have kept the info.about the bators for future reference..maybe will even give a crack at building one ourselves...I have time, and alot of nice folks who give their knowledge freely, so things are still good

Purdy, I actually agree with your hubby. I went that route...and it helped me to get used to the chickens before deciding to incubate.

Sally WAHHH Why are those eggs soooo far away??
