Penny for your thoughts- A day in the life of Penny Marshall ❤️

Pics
Many people over the years often asked me if Penny was my only chicken lol. To which I had to stop and laugh. I would then respond, no she is one of nine. They would often be surprised which I get since I often only spoke of her since she was so very special, a perfect model for photoshoots and spent a lot of time with me. The past few weeks have been a little lonely indoors without her but it has given me time to spend with her eight sisters which has been a lovely lovely gift.

So I am sure you all want to meet the other eight who graciously took a back seat for the past 2.5 years so I could focus on getting Penny stable to live her best life possible!

I have been keeping hens for over 11 years and have had 4 flocks over the years

So here goes- my current flock:

Oldest is Lo Bosworth- 8.5 year old EE hen, skiddish but cute. She hates being picked up and will fake a heart attack until you grab her. Once she is in your arms (very rarely - only for wellness checks) she is very very sweet!

Then there is our fearless flock leader Olivia Jade- 6 year old Partridge Rock hen. She is very very robust- my hubby says she is the perfect chicken in terms of looks. Very strong 💪🏻I have to thank Meyer Hatchery for mailing me this cutie!

Then we have her "sister" Sophie Germain- a 6 year old Cuckoo Marans hen. She is a little skiddish as well but gives adorable head shots with her floppy comb. Sophie has some crooked middle toes not shown here- she dislocated them by trying to escape the coop one day by throwing her body against the door repeatedly. As a result we healed them as good as possible albeit crooked lol.

Let's see
Then we have the "littles" Penny's generation, they are all 3 years old. I ordered 5 from Mount Healthy Hatchery in Ohio. They sent 6- and the remaining girls are thriving. This flock was the first flock I had that I didn't lose anyone in the first few years. Penny was the only one that got sick too.

So in no particular order..

Lucille Roberts sunbathing on the right- speckled sussex hen
With her sister Lane Bryant on the left - the bonus chick lol speckled sussex hen- these two are hysterical-they are so curious- mostly quiet and super cute. If all speckled are like these two I highly recommend! Lucille can scale a 6' fence and Lanes um.. robustness? Keeps her grounded lol 🤣

Mrs Butterworth- our barred rock hen
She is pretty solid but not super cuddly. Makes alarming unwarranted noises when I pick her up lol so of course I do that a lot much to her shagrin!

Steffi Graf our Bielefelder hen- quiet, beautiful and calm- she has potential house chicken vibes

Then we have Luna Lovegood 💜
My lavender orpington
I love love love orpingtons- but my three buffs that I had (flock two and three) all died suddenly at various points of their young lives, so I moved to a different color variation.
Luna is incredible, she is beautiful, smart and hands on in the garden with me. I am convinced she is part dog because she will follow me around the yard by my side if I have a tool in hand 🤣 Lunas downfall is that she knows how pretty she is and as a result eats others feathers (specifically Lane Bryant's butt feathers) to make sure everyone looks miserable and she looks amazing. I don't think poor Lane has ever had a fuzzy butt!
Luna was one of Penny's companions- once her preening got "rough" we would take her out- Penny would give me the side eye stating it's time for her to leave lol. (Penny was very very good at giving side eye btw)

Luna recently tried out for role of the house chicken and was awarded the role. Look for more adorable photos of Luna to come!

Now the only question is do I close out this thread and start a new chapter? Or do we continue to memorialize Penny and keep updates of the flock here? I propose the later but let me know your thoughts!

For some reason, I am only able to see the last photo.

I am leaning towards the latter too, but I would follow either way.

That's what I get for trying to post while on the commuter rail in and out of cel service lolol- should be all set now!

Ok so it's unanimous - we will update here and continue to share stories and the wonderful memories of Penny here too 🥰

@alinas2010 I think a best of Sophie selfies is a post in itself lol

And no- Lo Bosworth (known as Lobo for short) shows no signs of slowing down. She is healthy and very self sufficient. The only thing that has happened to her is she has had stridor (a partial blockage caused by a particle of food getting stuck) once or twice in the past because she is such a nervous Nelly lol. We usually give her lots of water and it passes quickly.

Here is a funny reaction video from Penny when Lobo had a bit of stridor once

The look on Penny's face is precious 💕

She's like- I have to sleep next to this all night??!!

🤣

I vote you continue on with this thread, of course, I'd follow if you started a new one.

All the ladies are beautiful, the names, love the names.

Luna Lovegood will make a wonderful companion. Orps are such sweet girls.

And of course, I like Mrs Butterworth, oh dear, I do like Rocks (they Rock!).

Look forward to more photos, stories and adventures❤️
