On this forum a while back, I asked about possible parentage for my baby chicks. Someone said my black skinned partridge chick was likely a silky mix. Well, she is not fluffy like a Silkie but she has a little hat of feathers, she is smaller than the other hens. The other day, I was thinking about that post and I was looking at her and I remembered that Silkies have 5 toes. I counted her toes. Five. I just wanted to say people on this forum are so smart and thank you.

Glad to see you're enjoying BYC! :frow

I'm also amazed to see all the things people know and are able to remember and keep straight.. and mostly just out of enthusiasm. :thumbsup

Silkie feathering gene (different from breed) is recessive and so first generation crosses will always be flat/smooth feathered. If they are bred back to another silkied bird (or another silkied cross) then a percentage of their offspring will also be silkied again.

Most often the crest, 5 toes, and feathered legs are dominant genes.

I went ahead and looked up your other thread and included the link here..
