people with house chickens

She is currently an only child, but she won't be in the long run I am hoping to get her some siblings. Also she does know she isn't alone in the house, she is currently with me I am home like 24/7 most weeks. She is a buff Orpington, chosen for her breeds people friendliness. She has a feather-duster companion in her brooder which is in my room. She was picked on in the store by the others and doesn't seem to mind being the only chicken in the house right now. Within an hour of being home she had calmed down and jumped up on my shoulder and was cuddled into my hair. She is sitting on my shoulder right now preening herself.

I do know they are flock animals, but so are almost 90% of the pet birds people keep alone.

I also choose a chicken because they have been domestic for along time and also the size, and aren't as fragile/small as other pet birds. And I have seen/known chickens kept as only chickens before so I do know she is going to need lots of time from me as long as she is an only.

We had two 14-week-old APA Ameraucana juvenile sisters and one died. We immediately got another Dominique chick to replace the lost pullet. The juvenile Ameraucanat got along with the Dominique chick letting it sit on her back and preen her face muff. Ameraucanas are wonderful tolerant birds. They would both fall asleep together on our lap. Both were in-house and I only put them together when I could supervise. If the Dom chirped in stress the Ameraucana would come running to see what was the matter. Flock birds instantly.

Unfortunately at 19 days old the Dom suffered a sudden seizure and was gone right before our eyes. She exhibited no symptoms except a little nibbling at her right foot just before roost. The next day the Ameraucana came looking for the Dom like she did every morning but there was no Dom. These birds formed a flock bond. Poor Ameraucana lost both her sister and the new Dom. We immediately started socializing her through the fence with the older flock as she really wanted to be around other birds and it was too late in the season to get another replacement chick friend.

You're correct about pet birds - they should be kept at minimum in pairs. We always kept our English in pairs. My daughter likes to keep two dogs also since they are pack animals.

Finn is an only chicken (only chicken inside) and has been for about 8 months now. He does go outside and he sees the girls through the wire fence, but he isnt allowed near them after one huge hen double his size attacked him. He would rather be inside than out with everyone else- I know that, because when I did have him out in the yard, he would stay alone by himself. He is such a spoiled baby, he can never be outside with the big girls!

Do you live on a farm? How's it going with the new additions?? I'm thinking to take my girls outside when it's nice in their cages.

I have a video of Maria eating mashed potatoes off a spoon while Daddy is holding her! Her little beak is just a clicking while eating it. Then Daddy wipes her beak then folds the napkin for her to wipe her own beak on it! A chicken with manners!

Dad loves Honey buns! Maria will just about dance herself off the back of the couch waiting to get her first bite of it!
Do you have a picture of your chickies??? Would love to see

My friend had a cockerel who she thought was a pullet. After the hens realized he was a cockerel the hens kept pecking and chasing him around the pen. She had to rescue him from the older hen party! For mating it is best to put only one hen with a roo - that way he won't get ganged upon because hens can get vicious in big numbers to protect their virginity.

If your roo can't be in a flock it is so sad but you don't want him beaten up either. He still sounds young though. If he's not a bantam he should be braver in the flock after he reaches full maturity. If you free-range it's good to give him and the girls time to socialize through the fence MOST of the day and not just for a few minutes. He might gain confidence after he matures and just put him in with one hen at a time so he can do what roos naturally do. As with people some roos and hens like each other for mating and others not so much. They'll pick and choose.

Yes? I'm awake now,

You quoted my mashed potato post but there's nothing written? I'm confused! Is there something I'm supposed to do here? I'm still learning this Forum!

Yep, and in June it will be one year since we started. Everyone is doing good, I think we might bring the chicks outside today!

He is about 8 months old, and yeah, a bantam. While the girls were out today I brought him out in a cage and they didnt seem to notice each other. I dont want him outside all of the time- he is still my inside baby!

Finn thinks he is a big hot shot too! Just today while he was outside in his run he kept doing the sideways walk to Blu, and the other day they got into a little fight. Funny thing is Finn is barely over a pound, and the girls are at least 7!
