She is currently an only child, but she won't be in the long run I am hoping to get her some siblings. Also she does know she isn't alone in the house, she is currently with me I am home like 24/7 most weeks. She is a buff Orpington, chosen for her breeds people friendliness. She has a feather-duster companion in her brooder which is in my room. She was picked on in the store by the others and doesn't seem to mind being the only chicken in the house right now. Within an hour of being home she had calmed down and jumped up on my shoulder and was cuddled into my hair. She is sitting on my shoulder right now preening herself.
I do know they are flock animals, but so are almost 90% of the pet birds people keep alone.
I also choose a chicken because they have been domestic for along time and also the size, and aren't as fragile/small as other pet birds. And I have seen/known chickens kept as only chickens before so I do know she is going to need lots of time from me as long as she is an only.
We had two 14-week-old APA Ameraucana juvenile sisters and one died. We immediately got another Dominique chick to replace the lost pullet. The juvenile Ameraucanat got along with the Dominique chick letting it sit on her back and preen her face muff. Ameraucanas are wonderful tolerant birds. They would both fall asleep together on our lap. Both were in-house and I only put them together when I could supervise. If the Dom chirped in stress the Ameraucana would come running to see what was the matter. Flock birds instantly.
Unfortunately at 19 days old the Dom suffered a sudden seizure and was gone right before our eyes. She exhibited no symptoms except a little nibbling at her right foot just before roost. The next day the Ameraucana came looking for the Dom like she did every morning but there was no Dom. These birds formed a flock bond. Poor Ameraucana lost both her sister and the new Dom. We immediately started socializing her through the fence with the older flock as she really wanted to be around other birds and it was too late in the season to get another replacement chick friend.
You're correct about pet birds - they should be kept at minimum in pairs. We always kept our English in pairs. My daughter likes to keep two dogs also since they are pack animals.
