people with house chickens

Hi TC - did you know raw potato peelings have a toxic substance in them for chickens? I think the green peels are even moreso. Apparently cooked is ok but not raw.

And as smart as chickens are about staying away from food that's bad for them the younger ones aren't quite as savvy and need to learn from the older chickens. I notice our newer pullets get excited about a new food set out but they wait to see if it is eaten by the older hens before they'll muscle in to partake. If the older hens don't like it or are too full and walk away so will the pullets.
I just LOVE watching babies with something good to eat! The way they run around peeping their heads off and wondering why all the other chicks are following it? LOL

I can't count how many times Maria will try to eat a large earth worm. I have to chase her down and pull the thing out of her mouth to keep her from choking on it! Dad had her out one evening and he saw her trying to eat a worm. Only this worm was fighting back. She eventually got it started down her throat and Dad went walking over to investigate. She kept turning around in circles to avoid him taking it from her. When he finally managed to get the end hanging out, he dropped it quickly. It was a **** snake! As soon as he dropped it on the ground it struck at him. It was a worm snake, but still!

PBGG: Oh YES! I was going to comment on your post earlier, but my eyeballs couldn't stay open any longer! Or was it the needed trip to town the reason? Hmmmmmm I'm a night owl and live a confusing time line! LOL
Beautiful place you have there as well as your chickens and pony! All the things to make a loving home - HOME!
Something you can do for Finn and use later on for a momma and chicks!?! Get one of those pop up tents and the screen that goes around it. Take a piece of fence and put around the bottom of it. There you have it! A pen with a top on it! We've actually put several of these together and made several divided sections under the tent for several house chickens to spend time outside!

This is a keeper for a photo contest!

How long did your pup live? None of our big Rotts went over 10 years.
I have several photos of them together that are keepers!

Now that's a hundred dollar question on his age!

I had a handsome Rotty too before I had chickens!

I'll have to do some figuring on their ages for ya! I'm way past my bedtime! Been up since 6:00 PM yesterday! My eyes are drooping and my fingers are getting slower on the keyboard! I'm one hour away from being up 24 hours!

Bet you can't guess where I'm headed too! LOL

Good God! Maria loves the potato peelings! She'll only eat the raw potato. Never eats the peelings! And of course her momma peels a raw potato just for herself too!

With my Buff Leghorn I have to make sure none of the tomato plants hang over the fence because she'll eat the leaves and they are toxic to both humans and chickens. The tomatoes are okay but she prefers the leaves so the garden is off-limits to her. The other chickens and Silkies don't eat the leaves and are fine to let loose in the garden for a few minutes but she has to stay out. Seems cruel to leave one out of the garden so we give her cucumbers to keep her busy.

Thank you! There's another pony, but he was too interested in food to see what was going on.

Currently I have a run with wire around it, its just a small thing, but yeah, I will need to divide it, because on nice days I try to get all of the animals outside.

We had our Silkie juvenile about 3 months old in-house wearing chicken diapers I made from a youtube.video until she was 6 months old before integrating her with one other Silkie, White Leghorn, and Marans. They all accepted her into the flock once socialization was complete through a wire fence barrier. However we had to instantly rehome the too-large Marans who attacked her about a month later. Thank goodness I saw it right away to rescue her. That Maran was rehomed to a friend who says she's still a sneaky snot. That Marans was also responsible for picking my other Silkie bald including chewing her comb. I'll never have another Marans again or any heavy LF with bantams again.

Love your Pancake. I like the Buff color and Black is another favourite of mine. What breed is Pancake? Is she an only child because chickens are flock birds.

She is currently an only child, but she won't be in the long run I am hoping to get her some siblings. Also she does know she isn't alone in the house, she is currently with me I am home like 24/7 most weeks. She is a buff Orpington, chosen for her breeds people friendliness. She has a feather-duster companion in her brooder which is in my room. She was picked on in the store by the others and doesn't seem to mind being the only chicken in the house right now. Within an hour of being home she had calmed down and jumped up on my shoulder and was cuddled into my hair. She is sitting on my shoulder right now preening herself.

I do know they are flock animals, but so are almost 90% of the pet birds people keep alone.

I also choose a chicken because they have been domestic for along time and also the size, and aren't as fragile/small as other pet birds. And I have seen/known chickens kept as only chickens before so I do know she is going to need lots of time from me as long as she is an only.

I was talking about how many chickens everyone had and if they were inside chickens. Also, there was one person who had so many animals I thought it would be a farm.

Finn is an only chicken (only chicken inside) and has been for about 8 months now. He does go outside and he sees the girls through the wire fence, but he isnt allowed near them after one huge hen double his size attacked him. He would rather be inside than out with everyone else- I know that, because when I did have him out in the yard, he would stay alone by himself. He is such a spoiled baby, he can never be outside with the big girls!
