people with house chickens

He can be very sweet! What ISNT cute is him biting your feet, ankles, and hand. Also, it isn't cute when he tries to mate with:

My slipper
My foot
My hand
my knee
Jackie, a DOG
my dad,
a sock,
Jackie's toys,

and anything else he can see. He is such a creep.
Boy he needs to meet my three sons with f feathers... Roody, Early and Sammy. Not a leaf even drops in the yard before one is trying to hump it.... love my boys though....

Hi All,

Ok, soooooooo, got the two incubators since I don't have enough eggs from Ginger and Sesame to get a decent sized clutch in a timely manner..
and, the date came when I was to move the first egg to the hatching/lock down incubator.
So, I pull out this little brown egg which was only slightly larger than a quail egg. I received my little candler in the mail so I decided to candle it.
It just didn't seem to look right and I figured the egg was a dud. Mind you, I have NEVER candled an egg before in my life! So, I placed it in the second bator and figured it couldn't hurt.

The faux pas that occurred within the following 48 hours:
  • humidity drops to 40%
  • bumped incubator with my foot and the egg went rolling across the entire distance of the incubator floor
  • humidity jumps to 90%
  • temperature declines to 95 degrees
  • humidity jumps back up to 90+%

I didn't stress too much, after all, the egg was a dud. I check the incubator before heading to bed and can't believe my eyes! There is a tiny hole in the egg. I am pretty sure I sat and watched the egg for an hour. Nothing happened and I began to panic. Was my little chick stuck, hurt, to tired to escape it's egg? I jumped on BYC and reviewed the education section. Satisfied I went to bed.
This is what I found in the morning....just not quite so dry...

ok, seriously, she or he is the cutest thing I have ever seen. the brooder is an old cooler... i'm so excited! I can't wait til a few more eggs start hatching!
MUST HAVE MORE CHICKENS!!! I think someone else said it was a sickness in another post. Yes it is. They are the best little pets you could have!
Oh my goodness those pictures of him/her falling asleep as you're stroking her head are priceless, how unbelievably sweet <3

Congratulations

Would you guys believe that three of my six hens all went broody. It was like a sickness spreading. I started with Agnes. She went broody and so i put five eggs under her two weeks ago. Within two days Begawky was wedged in there with her...Two days after that Hope was also squashed in with the other two. So i took two eggs and hope and tucked them in another part of the nest box (its divided into three nest boxes) and the clock is ticking... so excited.I wasnt sure Hopey was going to stay broody but so far so good. I tried to talk her out of it as she is still my baby but she is determined to be a big girl too. So what could I do? Hopefully something good will come of this. I might have made a mistake in not candling the eggs but Agnes is a pretty smart girl so I would think she could tell if they were bad. I hope or I will have one hell of a mess to clean up....Other than that, I am missing a female Guinea. I hope she is ok and just sitting on a nest somewhere, even though I really dont have space for more guineas,. I am going to look for her tomorrow. Also my three roosters decided to act up two weeks ago and two ganged up on the littler one. I separated them for a few days and rotated them between the chicken barn and the guinea barn every other night so none of them could get overly confident with the ladies and so far so good. They have been back together for over a week now and no problems. I am hoping they continue to get along. Although Im told not to get my hopes up. I am trying to reprogram their bad behaviors though in the hopes they can be retrained. That coupled with the fact that Cochin are notoriously gentle and I may succeed in getting them to get along. I hope. I cant choose between my three feathery sons. Hope everyone is doing good, and Summer is almost here! Yeah!

This one i am not so sure wants to go back out...

I think he is going on 3 this summer. Almost died last summer, i got him through it but he hasn't tried a hen since.

Broodiness IS contagious!! I keep my big hens in my den and my EE went broody...put some of the fertile silkie eggs under her. Then a week later the silkie went broody! Not sure but the RIR may have went broody while I was gone in michigan lol. Now all 3 have lost weight and are molting ugghhh. I am pampering them and they are gaining weight no problem. No one is laying at this time out of 3 hens. I am making a bigger flock of big hens that should start laying by August/Sept, but I am enlisting my step dtr's bf to help make a very secure and weather proof coop. BTW its GORGEOUS outside today!!! Everyone is outside foraging and dogs are sunning as well as the cats :)

CONGRATS Maddies Mum! Love baby pics :) I will get pics of our new babies and post later...

GD91: if my Grandma were still alive she would agree with your gran :) Just don't eat their poo and take care of them... She was a firm believer in kids learning all about the natural way things happen on the farm. We used to nurse cats, dogs, pigs and goats and calves in the house. We experienced death and hatched babies too. She sent us as wee little ones to collect the eggs...I mean like 4 or 5 yrs old with mean roos and a stubborn old hen. I have so many lovely memories from her farm. Too bad its not in the family anymore... This reminds me that I really should write a collection of memoirs from Grandma's farm. I inherited my love of animals from her I'm sure!!
:D
