Permethrin spray

Alas, after many years we've finally got lice. Finishing up hatching egg collection, butchering male breeders this weekend and will put the flock back together for Monday morning treatment. Happy I found this thread for dosage but can't say we're happy for the reason. Oh well, wood ash was only preventative measure and oddly only the hens use it for bathing. Breeder males have shown signs of infestation for a while now and recently the lice have moved to the girls. Figure I'll spray each one in turn taking out of coop in morning then clean all the liter and nests out for coop spraying. Shouldn't take too long to air out with back access door propped open. Course I'll be doing it alone with pump sprayer so thinking I'll sport goggles as I can already see myself fumbling with a bird one hand and long wand spray handle other. Yup, going to be a fun time...

Seems my male always has them the worst....and of course spreads them to all the girls.

That's how I started, but after the first 2 birds, the rest decided that they didn't care if it was dark, they were leaving. Doesn't help that most of them "roost" on the floor, and the roost is so big that I can't reach the birds that go to the farthest back corner (and they know it).

I too have a back roost that is too difficult to reach (they know it to) even for cleaning poo. So I will be removing that one very soon.

So after cleaning out the coop you then sprayed? Or did you spray the shavings and all? As far as the birds did you just spray the feathers? While they were roosting at night?

True confessions:  I miss figured the dilution a bit, apparently my late night arithmetic skills aren't so hot!  I used 16 ml. of product in the half-gallon sprayer, and it should have been 10 ml. per half-gallon water instead.  It's a lower dose than for some other species, and no harm was done, but still stupid on my part!  We sprayed lightly rather than maxing out the dosage, so I think it turned out fine.  Still, super easy, no dust, no fuss, and seems good so far

We didn't clean out the bedding, just sprayed the roosts, and the birds on the roosts, and the walls of the coop, and the bedding. Lightly! Nothing was soaked; many birds and a 15' x'24' building, and quart of spray total. SO EASY! Also, haven't had mites since, although that's good luck. Mary

I'd like to thank you all for this thread. I didn't know there was a liquid Permethrin. Went out and bought a bottle yesterday...let the spraying begin!

There are two things I read here that I'd like to address tho.
Someone said that peafowl don't get leg mites. This might be true but I know that pheasants DO get leg mites and they are the same family. It could be that they just are not noticed on peas due to the larger scales.
The other thing is that, at least some types of bird mites, DO bite people. I've had chickens and battled mites for years without getting bit but I'm now going through the second bout of bites in the last six months and I'm absolutely miserable with itching. The last time it happened I went to a dermatologist who gave me a Permetherin cream to get rid of them and I'll probably end up going back for more. I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that the spray gets rid of them in the coops or I might just be done with chickens.

I said that I hadn't ever seen peafowl with leg mites.
