Chipmunk Chicks
Free Ranging
Guys! I am kind of excited. Some of you may know that I currently have five pullets growing out in my basement that I've started for a family member. The chicks are 8 weeks old now, and I have officially moved the chicks I've decided to keep out into the coop. We will also be traveling out of state to help him get his own coop and run cleared out, up and running, to receive said pullets. But in the meantime... I gotta get these birds out of my basement.
So here's the plan, I have an extra-large plastic dog crate that's about the same size as the big metal crate I've been using as a brooder, which will become their "coop" to sleep in overnight, nested inside a 37 sqft collapsible run I found on Amazon. The crate we have had forever; the run cost me $115. We also have HWC and lumber on hand, tarps, zipties, what have you.
This is not intended to be a permanent enclosure, however we will want to make it secure enough that they can be on grass all day, and sleep securely overnight. It will be used for now to grow out the pullets until their "forever home" is ready, but could be used in the future to quarantine any new birds, or pull out a few birds for breeding purposes, infirmary etc. so I want it to be sturdy enough that I'm not too worried about keeping anybody in there, but also lightweight enough that in the "off season" it can be taken apart and folded up for storage.
Wish me luck!
