PetSmart visit ends in BYC cricket massacre

I got just about the same response when I got 6 dozen crickets from Pet Supplies Plus a little while ago. "Those are some spoiled chickens!" I heard someone comment. Of course... I was also buying 4 bird toys at the same time too. Those big strings of wooden chews with a bell on the end.

We go to the bait shop for crickets. We get 100 per dollar. SO, DH takes his cricket box, gets 400 crickets and then gets chased around as he dumps them in the yard. The girls try to take them from the cricket box, but it's wire mesh and they can only try.

Hmm. I am thinking that in the frozen north, we may not be able to get crickets at a bait shop at this time of year? I am thinking that fish aren't expecting a cricket to fall in the lake when the lake is frozen, so I doubt crickets are used in ice fishing? Usually bait is matched to the natural foods a fish might expect to encounter. Anyone know?

I'm also not sure if we have many bait shops here, actually. I think we just have a little section of bait in just about every general store or convenience store... crickets seem quick to spoil vs. refrigerated worms.

I inadvertently took two quail to PetCo tonight. Had a button with a quite bad head boink injury in my gym bra and an attention hound of a Coturnix in the pocket of my hoodie. Both were asleep and I honestly forgot they were there. When we got to the store, Bumbles woke up and chattered at me to see what was going on. I plopped the Coturnix on a handkerchief in the seat of the cart, and started shopping. Everyone came over to see her, ask what she was, or take guesses. She was getting petted and coo'd over and Cricket decided he wanted some attention. He popped his head out the neck of my shirt and started crowing.

Which set off the parrots. It sounded like the monkey house at a zoo for a few minutes, and while I'm cringing from the ruckus my tiny little button quail caused, people are staring at me asking, "Is that a bird in your shirt?!" I waited for the obligatory 'or are you just happy to see me?' but nobody said it.

We weren't buying bugs. I was looking for bird-safe antiseptic ointment for Cricket's head. They didn't have any.

That's awesome that you took quail to PetCo!!

I took my banty cochin to PetCo this weekend. There weren't many people there but people who noticed her (she was in my hand basket on a towel) were really curious about her.

I am just getting into chickens, and am so excited as I just now realized how they might help me with my grasshopper problem!!!! Yippeeee!

It only took one trip to the garden and the chickens completely denuded it of grasshoppers (27 chickens in a 50ft x 75 ft garden)... but, unfortunately, I think they did more damage than the grasshoppers! It sure was fun watching them trample things as they hopped, flapped and ran after either the grasshoppers or any chicken lucky enough to have one in her beak. Later, instead of letting them in the garden, I "cattle drove" the grasshoppers out of the garden into the chicken run (the run shares a welded wire fence with the garden). Not as funny, but safer for the plants!

I paid $11 for crickets at Petco the other day inspired by Jenns thread.

I only have 8 chickens.
