In the first pic, the front chicken is out of focus and it has a lot of motion blur in the head. Also the camera is not level. The post and the tree in the background are slanted. You need to twist the camera clockwise a little to make everything level. Also the front chickens tail is cropped off. Ideally you want the entire chicken in the frame, or just his head for a portait. If you got 90% of his body in frame you really should include his entire body.

The second image is much better. Both the chickens are fully in the frame and in focus. I would crop using rule if thirds instead of putting them in the middle. Since they are looking left you want more open space to the left of them. So I would crop to put their heads near the upper right third intersection line.

The only other thing is paying attention to your backgrounds. In the first pic my eye was drawn to the blue/green pot/tote because it stood out. In the second pic there is a camper/rv in the background. Ideally you want a fairly uniform background that's not distracting so all your focus stays on the subject.

Here's how I would crop the second one. I took some off the top and right so their heads are near the upper right third intersection.

Thank you very informative. I'm so busy trying to capture the chicken I'm not looking at ever thing . The items in the back ground are distracting. I will go back and look at them again I do like the second picture much better.

Which one's better? The first one is the original. And the little dots are bees flying around, they love the crabapple trees!

First one needs to be lightened up and it'll be fine (it's a little grainy though, what did you shoot this with?)

Second one, I don't like the yellow, it needs to be cooler and brighter rather than warmer.

This better? I took both photos with my Sony a300, and I didn't think they were that grainy...

I'm just trying to figure out how there are shadows coming from the left and right side of that path. What planet did you take these on?
I thought it was Earth…maybe that was one from my trip to Venus. I knew I should have kept them straight

I actually like the look of the second image because I like shooting in golden hour light but it doesn't look as "natural" as the first. I think splitting the difference between the first two (a little closer to the first) might would work. Brightening the image up helped a lot also.

But seriously, the shadows in this path had me scratching my head for a minute. It's like there's two sun's that are shining from each side of the image, lol. I guess it's just shining straight down the path on the branches that overhang the path.
