Owl B has some dark in the ear tips where your feathering cut didn't quite get all the pixels when you background swapped. :)

Yes, I'm a jerk. :)
AUTOmask, lol. Good catch.... I just did an auto subject detect mask, inverted it, and raised the background exposure by 1.5 stops.

I normally slightly darken the background and slightly brighten the subject to make it pop a little. This results in a darker overall exposure though.

Going forward, anytime my subject is the same or darker than the background, I'm going to brighten the background. Yeah, it gives it more contrast and brightens the overall image...

What do y’all think of these?

I don’t think I like this one because the leaves at the end of the branch aren’t in focus.

Which looks better. A or B?

HAWK:

B)

I like B on the Hawk, the contrast is pleasing and easy on the eyes.
I like A on the owl. The background color fits the picture well and is less harsh overall. A is a pleasing blend of darker colors naturally blending together to create an overall comfortable feel.
I feel like B has too much contrast with the background and it being at least slightly unnatural therefore taking away from the natural flow of the overall photo color.

When I look at a picture my eyes often either feel sore or they relax. Picture A gives my eyes a comfortable feeling.
Picture B feels a tad harsh to my eyes.

I'm not an expert, (my wife says I am) but I do enjoy a bit of novice photography for largely personal use.

I love the lighting in all of these with the sun backlighting the leaves. You've already hit on the main challenge yourself though, the depth of field here is causing various focusing issues. Of the 3, I like the third the best but it's slightly backfocused. Your focus is best in the first one where you're a bit further back.

Good reasoning. I darkened both backgrounds initially, because they were not natural and darkening helps to hide that.

I didn't really like how much that lowered the overall exposure of the images though, so I tried brightening it instead.

The background is smoother in the hawk, so it's less distracting and I do prefer B on it.

I had mixed feelings on the owl. I think somewhere between A and the B on the owl might work... but I tend to prefer the darker owl background as well.

Thanks for the input....
