AUTOmask, lol. Good catch.... I just did an auto subject detect mask, inverted it, and raised the background exposure by 1.5 stops.Owl B has some dark in the ear tips where your feathering cut didn't quite get all the pixels when you background swapped.

I like A for both since the eyes are the main subject, and there’s more of a contrast between the eyes and the backgroundWhich looks better. A or B?

I like B on the Hawk, the contrast is pleasing and easy on the eyes.
I like A on the owl. The background color fits the picture well and is less harsh overall. A is a pleasing blend of darker colors naturally blending together to create an overall comfortable feel.
I love the lighting in all of these with the sun backlighting the leaves. You've already hit on the main challenge yourself though, the depth of field here is causing various focusing issues. Of the 3, I like the third the best but it's slightly backfocused. Your focus is best in the first one where you're a bit further back. What do y’all think of these?

I don’t think I like this one because the leaves at the end of the branch aren’t in focus.

#2 is the best one here. Isolated nicely and the focus is forward so the background all falls into a lovely bokeh.
Good reasoning. I darkened both backgrounds initially, because they were not natural and darkening helps to hide that.I like B on the Hawk, the contrast is pleasing and easy on the eyes.

I feel like B has too much contrast with the background and it being at least slightly unnatural therefore taking away from the natural flow of the overall photo color.
When I look at a picture my eyes often either feel sore or they relax. Picture A gives my eyes a comfortable feeling.
Picture B feels a tad harsh to my eyes.
I'm not an expert, (my wife says I am) but I do enjoy a bit of novice photography for largely personal use.
